I grew up saying that, but at some point I began saying [ˈkʰæɚ̯əml̩] as well, and now I switch between the two according to criteria so arcane I've never been able to sort them out.

[ˈkʰɛə̯˞ʌˌmɛɫ]

(looking at linguoboy's transcriptions, [ə̯˞] is actually how I say intervocalic r's too, and learned this is a better transcription than [ɹ])

linguoboy wrote:[ˌkɛɚ̯iˈoʊki]

Same, but with the aspiration of Japanese voiceless stops.

Kirk wrote:Does anyone else here have the pronunciation [θeŋ] for "thing?" I usually do (tho it's interchangeable with [θiŋ] for me) and it seems relatively common here. Since I have front-vowel raising before monomorphemic /ŋ/, historical /θɪŋ/ is my [θiŋ] and I presume my [θeŋ] is rooted in historical /θæŋ/ (as historical /hæŋ/ is my [heŋ]), which is found in some American dialects of English.

What's interesting is that in related forms "something" and "nothing" I only have [-iŋ], never *[-eŋ]. This would also seem to give evidence to the analysis of my [θeŋ] as rooted in a separate lexical item from historical /θɪŋ/, as /ɪŋ/>/eŋ/ does not occur elsewhere in my dialect.

For me, [θeŋ] is interchangeable with [θɪŋ]...

AFAIK there's no such thing as an "Austin accent." :hmm: But yes, it's possible that toogletoggle does have a Texas accent. :yep: I've met some people like that here (in Austin) but not all that many.

How peculiar. I do. I suspect it might be a dark L.

Oh crap. I said "no" when I meant yes. It's one of those times when you plan to do something way in advance, but then when you finally actually do it, you mess it up.

So yeah, I do pronounce the l in peculiar. Sorry for the confusion!

May I ask then what kind of L is that because there are some recordings in dictionaries where I can't distinguish any L sound at all :/
(like this one: http://ssl.gstatic.com/dictionary/static/sounds/de/0/peculiar.mp3
or this (here I am able to hear it, but it's very soft) http://static.sfdict.com/staticrep/dictaudio/P02/P0202200.mp3)

Maybe it would help if it was possible for you to play the recording really slowly? It sounds pretty short in both recordings.

My dialect is also very Californian-sounding because my mom grew up there.

I was thinking today about the way I pronounce student, which is something like [ʃtʃʉd̚n̩t].
How does everyone else do it?
