* The Kildin Saami word тӯндар originally meant elevated treeless plain (sometimes translated as fell, fjeld) in Kildin Saami; the genitive/accusative/illative singular form is тӯннтрэ. This was borrowed into Russian as тундра and from there borrowed into other languages, including English, as tundra. It is related to Finnish tanner and tantere (area of ground, yard, flat open land), Ludic tander (land that has become hard and flat by being trampled on), Estonian tundur (treeless hill inside a forest or taiga), and Estonian tander and tanner (battlefield, battleground).
In Kildin Saami the word ча̄рр is a synonym for тӯндар.
