Uralic Music Thread

Postby Linguaphile » 2018-03-10, 1:47

I'm not sure if there will be a Uralic language forum at some point, but I thought it would be fun to have a thread for music in the various Uralic languages. Hopefully this is the right place for it for now. So, you can post music in any Uralic language here. It's not required that you post the lyrics or translation (but if you have them, it would be great to post them!)
I'll start with a song in Võro: Tii (The Road, or The Way), by Neiokõsõ. This was Estonia's 2004 Eurovision entry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc5mKBTKPXM
Esi hinnäst

kikkalauluga.
Lätsi jäti vallalõ väräti
tulku tõõsõ ka!

Saa-õi maada,
tii lätt jo edesi
ümber mi õi lää.
Huug om sääne
et sääl kon silmäpiir
ummi varbit nää.

Oroviir, mõtsatii
ülõ jõõ, ülõ mää
Tiiä-õi kohe tuu
elo viil käänd.

Eelä mi joht olli ja
täämbä mi tulli ja
hummõl mi jälki jo lää.

Pääväkõ paistus jo
kõgõ mi süämen
ja egäl puul om miil jo hää.

Sadulmoi, a traditional Votic song. Sung by Mari Kalkun and the group Runorun, with kannõl music (kannel/kantele/Baltic psaltery).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_tv-pBpsRM
Lähzin kotont kulkõmaa,
sadulmoi sadu zelennoi sadu,
väräjiltä veeremää,
sadulmoi...
izää uuvvõssaa tuvassaa,
velloo koossa korikiass.
Lähzin miä vaa läpi tšülää,
läpi uuvvõõ kuuvvõõ linnaa.
Lein miä jalgani tšiveesee,
varpaa lein miä vahtõrpuhõõ.
Issuzin maalõõ itkõõmaa.
Tuli maama palvomaa –
em mennüd maamaa palvotšillõ.
Tuli taatta võttamaa –
em mennüt taataa kutsutšillõ.
Tuli vello võttamaa,
pani parii õpõissa ettee,
ettee se emäõpõizõ,
tagaa tammaa varzukkõizõõ.
Issuzin miä velloo rekkee,
silmät silkillä sitõlin,
jalgõt katõin kankahallõ.
Oroi johsi, matka joutu,
reki liuku, tee lüheeni.

Hommik Siberis (Morning in Siberia), a song by Mari Kalkun and Runorun which starts off in Estonian and ends with a traditional Livonian springtime song (Tšitšolinkist/Waking the Birds/Lindude äratamine).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFa9jrrGo9U
Ta tõuseb vara
kui pilved veel ei ole
oma kuju võtnud.
Nii nagu iga hommik
nii ka täna.
Üks liivi naine
pragunenud huultel soov.
Ja siis ta laulab kodust igatsusest
Ei ole unustanud koduallikaid
Ei ole unustanud lootust.

Three songs in Ingrian* in Finnish by the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble. According to the video description, they are called:

0:00 Korvessa kuusen juurella
'In a forest, beneath Spruce Boughs'
2:33 Imatran rannalla
'On the Shores of the Imatra'
6:24 Kaunis oli koivu
'Beauteous was the Birch'

* The songs appear on an album called 'Ingrian Folk Songs', mentioned on the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble's homepage, that's why I thought... Thanks to Naava for pointing it out. :)

Are you sure that's Ingrian? Sounds like Finnish. :hmm:

In any case, I'd change the translations a little:
Korvessa kuusen juurella - In a forest*, beneath spruce boughs
Imatran rannalla - On the shores of Imatra (without the article)

*Wikipedia says korpi is a 'coniferous swamp' in English.

//Edit: now I found out that Imatra used to mean the rapid as well, which nowadays is called Imatrankoski. I still wouldn't use the article, though.

Kiitos paljon! I was just relying on the video description, but perhaps I misunderstood it. Are they Ingrian songs translated into Standard Finnish?

It's hard to say what the origin of these songs are. I'm not familiar with any of them (but of course I'm not a walking folk song book, there are many folk songs I've never heard :P) but they sound like Finnish folk songs. That doesn't help much because Finnish folk songs have similarities with Swedish, Russian and Estonian folk songs... I'd be surprised if Ingrian folk songs were drastically different.

To make it even harder to tell where these songs come from, there were two groups of people living in Ingria: Izhorian-speaking Ingrians and Finnish-speaking Ingrians. Maybe these songs were sung by Finnish-speaking Ingrians (which would make them Ingrian folk songs but the language would be Finnish)? It's also possible that whoever downloaded these songs on Youtube was mistaken and these songs were actually Finnish folk songs - I don't know. I'm a bit doubtful about them being translated because in that case, you should be able to find the original version, right? :hmm:
