Could it be 'with', like Estonian -ga and spoken Finnish kaa?

I think there were some threads where I haven't answered to you yet. I'm going to do that when I can - the autumn semester started last week and I'm busy with the courses and other things, like trying to find a dishwasher at last!

Oh good grief, of course it is. I'm not sure why I had convinced myself that in this sentence it was something other than the comitative -ka... why did I think it must have some other meaning here? I guess it was because Estonian doesn't use comitative when saying this, but then, Estonian doesn't even use the same verb when saying this (pillittää versus mängima), so there's no reasons to think the grammatical cases should match.

Maybe you can use your standard Finnish and/or Southern Ostrobothnian to provide some insight into three other questions I had with the above exercises (the downside to working from monolingual materials with no explanations of grammar!):
For example, the use of impersonal in these two sentences
Linguaphile wrote:Kassõnn ammuizõlt aigalt eletä vaďďalaizõd. = Votic people have lived in this land since a long time ago. (Estonian: Sellel maal elavad ammusest ajast vadjalased.)
elää (impersonal eletä) = to live (elama, impersonal elatakse, but Estonian uses 3pl elavad)

Linguaphile wrote:Vaďďalaizõd pillitetä kantõlõka. = Votic people play the kantele. (Estonian: Vadjalased mängivad kannelt.)
pillittää (impersonal pillitetä) = to play an instrument (Estonian pilli mängima, impersonal mängitakse, 3p mängivad)

Okay, this is uncertain for several reasons. One, it surprises me to see impersonal used when there is a clear personal subject (vaďďalaizõd/Votic people), even though I understand that it's a sort of generic one and that may be why the impersonal can still be used here. It would sound totally wrong to use impersonal like this in Estonian though. What about in Finnish?
At first I thought eletä and pillitetä might be second-person plural conjugations rather than impersonal. Since the intended audience for materials written in Votic are Votic people, that really makes sense: "[You] Votic people have lived in this land since a long time ago" and "[You] Votic people play the kantele." It's still quite possible that's what it is, actually.
"You live" should be elättä rather than eletä, but this workbook uses a slightly different dialect than I'm used to (for example, they use päive for päivä, so I even know that the e/ä variation is quite possible here, at least in the opposite direction). But, when I looked these words up in the Vadja-Eesti Sõnaraamat, päive is in fact listed as a dialect variation there... eletä is not... and pillitetä is specifically listed only as an impersonal form, as in these examples:
    (vot) Siäll laulota ja pillitetä.
(et) Seal lauldakse ja mängitakse pilli.
(vot) Kuuntõõ ku lustissi muuzikka pillitetä.
(et) Kuula, kui ilusasti mängitakse muusikat.
So I guess my question is: does Finnish offer any insights into what might be happening here in Votic, when a impersonal-form-that-could-actually-be-dialectal-second-person-plural is used in sentences with the subject of generalized "Votic people"?

Linguaphile wrote:(vot) Saan lahja i ämmelle: "suurõd passibad".
(et) Saan kingituse ja [ütlen] vanaemale: "suur tänu".
(en) I receive a gift and [I say] to grandmother: "thank you very much".

It surprised me that the verb (juttõn, "I say") was left off here, so I'm not sure I'm translating it correctly, although the meaning otherwise seems fairly clear. I-receive gift and to-grandmother: "thank you!" Would a sentence like this ever be said in Finnish this way without the verb? I have sometimes seen similar constructions in Estonian, although not this specific one, and I'm not sure what the rule is (or if there even is a rule to follow) when certain words are omitted/implied.

Linguaphile wrote:(vot) Kui süün, juttõn leip-sool.
(et) Kui söön, ütlen jätku leiba [leib-sool].
(en) If I'm eating, I say bon appetite [lit. bread-salt].

It seems slightly backwards that the one who is eating is the one who says this. But in English ("good appetite") and in Estonian ("may the bread last"), the sentences are clear wishes to the eater. In Votic it is literally "bread-salt" and the intention is for the visitor to join in the meal. I believe either person can say it and it is expected that both will eat. It is presumably a Russian loan (хлеб-соль). Do any of the varieties of Finnish that you are familiar with have an equivalent expression to leip-sool (bread-salt) too?

Naava wrote:I think there were some threads where I haven't answered to you yet. I'm going to do that when I can - the autumn semester started last week and I'm busy with the courses and other things, like trying to find a dishwasher at last!
So I'll just ask you a whole bunch of questions in this post, to give you more to do.
