This is one of my favorite languages. It is a dying, if not already extinct, language. It is a Baltic-Finnic language spoken in the Russian region of Ingria which is situated between Estonia and Finland. It is like a mix of Estonian, Finnish, and Russian (in that order). It is most closely related to Estonian, but it has vowel harmony and extensive consonant gradation. The lexicon seems somewhat more conservative and resembles Finnish a bit more sometimes than Estonian. There are also a number of Russian borrowings. The phonology is also mainly Russian influenced. Almost all the letters are like those of Russian except those specific to the Estonian style of Finnic languages (ä, ö, ü, õ, etc.). Since it is used in Russia, there is both a Latin and a Cyrillic version of the orthography.

I will select an example that illustrates the same thing in both Cyrillic and Latin:
(I'm not entirely sure on the exact correspondence between the cyrillic and latin letters, so I hope this is correct)

I sit at the side of the road

I don't want to be here, where I've come to
I don't want to be there, where I'm going
Why do I, impatiently,
Watch him changing the wheel?

As I was growing up, a little hen,
As I grew, a young one,
beside five brothers,
as a flower of six brothers,
supported by seven uncles,
as the sister-in-law of eight daughters-in-law,
brothers used to call me little sister,
brothers' wives called me sister-in-law,
father called me golden,
mother called me a good child,
the family called me a flower of the grass,
I slept more than others,
I worked less than the others,
I went to the village more than others,
but I had respect.
I went to other lands, little berry,
I went to other shores, little hen,
I went to the village less than others,
I slept less than others,
I worked more than others,
and I didn't have respect.
My name changed to another,
They called me devil.

Part of the story "Kotohaltiaad" from Vad́d́aa Rahva Jutud ja Kaazgad (compiled by O.I. Konkova, 2009), with an attempt at an English translation. The house-spirits described here as altiaz are haldjas in Estonian.

Koto-altiaa näin. Mie makazin iezä põlua. Tuli inehmisenn. Tuli, ko tallazi siltapuita müö, prakizivad, krõpizivad kõik siltapuud. Kukalie tallaz. Naiz-eläjä õli. Kassa pittšä takanna õli. Domovikka on venäissi. A altiaz on vaissi.
Jutõlti, što domovikk tuõb. Eb nähtü. A kuultii, mitä viskaab sielt ahjoo päält maalõõ. Süüvvä bõllu annõttu, tämä müütää bõllu süümin. Siz suuttu i viskaz samovaraa nurkkaa.
Rihee haltiain, tätä eb nätšünnü. Õli nätšümättä. A ühs naizikko peltšäz ain domovikkaa. Taitšin õli ahjoo päälee segattu. A taitšin happanõb siel, аin teeb: «Peš, peš». A naizikko kuuntõõb: «Vet tõsi ontši, domovikka!» Hüppäz johsõmaa rehessä. A paglatšennäd õltii jalgaz, a paglad õltii avõõ. Tämä ko meni, tallaz ripilää päälee. Ripil tätä lei seltšää. Tämä ko toukkaz uhzõõ avõõ, nii ize hüppäz rihenettee. Uhzõõ toukkaz tšiini. Paglad jätti uhzõõ väliisee. Ize lankõz maalõõ. Uhs meni tšiini. Meni naapurii, nii juttõõb: «Tõsi ontši, jotti on domovikka. Miä kuulin, ko puhki. Mie hüppäzin johsõmaa. Tämä minnua lei seltšää ja toukkaz maalõõ»

This is a 2014 version of a 1942 recording of a 19th-century Votic tale, "Jürtši da Mato" (St. George and the Serpent), told in Votic, with English subtitles. The second one is the other way around: it is told in English with Votic subtitles. The tale and imagery contains elements of all of its various timelines: traditional Votic clothing and foods, thatched houses, mythical serpents, Orthodox icons, tsars, Leningrad, buses, airplanes. :D

Creation Song

Pääskolintu, päivälintu,
se ihala ilmalintu
lenteli tšesoizõt päiväd,
üüt pimmiät pilkottõli.
Ettsi maata maatõssõni,
murua munitõssõni,
lehtoja levätesseni,
peltoja pezitäkseni.
Nätši mättä’ä meressä,
sinize mere sizessä.
Valõ vaskizõ pesäize,
muni kultaizõd munaizõd.
Tuli tuuli, aivoi tuuli,
mere vihkura vihainõ,
laukas pesä Laukahase,
veeretti munad vettehe.
Täütü pääsko itkõ’õma.
Pääsko itki, tšüünel veeri.
Lentä’äs sepä katolõ:
„Seppüeni, velvüeni,
tagoid enne, tagoid egle,
tago siis tänävä-päivä!
Tee sa millõ haravainõ,
vala varsi vaskinõ ja
paa vaa piit terässized,
millä ajan mere kokko,
kopitan kultaizõd munõizõd!“

The Origin of My Songs

Tšako kukku, maa kumizi,
lintu laulo, lehto lõõkku,
sisavõ pani pajuzõ.
Miä vaa kuuntõlin kujalõ,
ajattõlin add´a päälle:
tšene tšeeli kerkiäpi,
kummall laulu laatuizõmpi?
A tšago tšeeli kerkiäpi,
linnu laulu laatuizõmpi,
sisava sõnat parõpõd.
Menin miä tšülä kujalõ,
algin tšakonnõ kukkua,
sisavõnnõ sirkutõlla.
Viizaz vahti viilon alta,
kavala katosõn alta:
“Tämä on õppiza õllu,
sõisnu on seppije pajazõ,
sepä paja on paukutõllu,
vasaroit on vankutõllu.”
Miä vaitõn vassaõlin:
“En õlõ õppizõ õllu,
sõisnu seppije pajazõ!
Õppizin miä orjuõzõ,
panin pähe poikuõzõ,
ku õlin orjanna Viroza,
poikanna piru pezäzä.”
