Mari

Postby linguaholic » 2009-11-24, 15:47

During the my usual language-addict-surfing-instead-of-doing-uni-assignments yesterday I somehow came across Mari and it looks pretty interesting.

No illusions, I don't have the time to study it seriously right now, but I would like to read up on it a bit/pick up some bits and pieces. Problem: resources. It seems that there are mostly exremely short summaries or extremely detailed linguistic papers online, both of which are not really useful to me right now ... It seems I have to learn Finnish and/or Russian first, because there is so little in English or German (not to mention Dutch or Esperanto :P )
Just checked my university's library site, they seem to have an old grammar (1922) and dictionary (1948), both in German. And "An eastern Cheremis manual : phonology, grammar, texts and glossery" (1997), looks quite promising. I'm gonna have a look tomorrow. :)
However, do any of you know of good resources online? Is there anybody here who speaks or studies it?

And yes, I already found this:

Well, I'm interested in all Finno-Ugric languages and I've thought myself Mari just for a month from this. Some stuff about Mari can be found but mostly in Russian from http://www.uztranslations.net.ru. So, if you can speak Russian there will be no problem to you. But if you can't, you'd better give up. :yep:

Hmm I see... There seems to be quite a lot of Russian material indeed. Well, maybe one day.

I got the manual from the library today. It is rather dense, but an interesting read nevertheless. And it's got a collection of tales and stories (without translation)! It's all in phonetic transcriptions (dictating style) though. Maybe if I feel adventurous some time I'll try to transcribe it into Cyrillic. :para:

1. Check this blog and follow the links he gives.
2. Of course you have to learn (to read) Russian! Trying to learn Mari without Russian is a bit like trying to learn Irish without any English.

Wow, thanks! Lots of useful stuff on Mari there and an interesting blog on the whole!

Sounds like a walk in the park from you slavic natives. :|

Anyway, as I said, I'm not really serious about this right now and I have lots of other stuff going on, so learning Russian (or Mari, for that matter) is out of the question this year, but maybe I'll come back to it.

(By the way, I think you could learn quite a bit on Irish only knowing German, there are quite a few books on the market. But then again, Irish has that fairy tale popularity. :P )

I love Finnic languages and ive had my eye on Mari for a while. It definitely does seem interesting especially being written in Cyrillic. Maybe some day when I have oodles of free time I might give it a shot :)

Lack of Russian knowledge seems no longer to be a problem:

Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.

I found this site in Russian, there are many links in it and I think it could be interesting. I didn’t have time to to read it all, not to check all the sections, but there’s also an English section, though I don’t know if it really matches the one written in Russian.
