New forum font / layout

Postby Luís » 2018-03-05, 14:42

As discussed here, the way this forum looks has changed a bit last weekend.

- The very specific Trebuchet font is gone. We now have Arial and a generic (browser-dependent) sans serif font.
- The subforum listing now has 2 columns instead of 3. This gives us more space to include flags / have longer forum names.

I'll leave the poll open for a week or so, feel free to report any issues / bugs here as well.

Where as I voted for "love it", I could care as long as we don't go back to trebuchet, or any equally crappy font.

The part with the language-specific subforums on the index page is completely messed up for me now because there isn't enough space for three columns any more. This means that each line is wrapped after two languages.

kevin, I'm not sure I understand what you mean... can you post a screenshot? The fact that you're only seeing two columns instead of three is "normal" (see my first post). It should look this:

Ah, I see. Well, even if it worked like that for me, I think I liked three columns better because then everything fits on the screen without scrolling.

This is what I get:

In my browser (latest Firefox) it renders like in kevin's, and I consider it a bug.

No opinion on the fonts, I already override them with my browser's defaults. The CSS should just specify sans, serif, and mono where appropriate, no point in enforcing specific fonts.

Are you using Linux? You guys and vijayjohn seem to be having similar issues.

Anyway, we can always keep the new font settings but go back to 3 columns again. Yes, the names will be truncated and there will be less space for flags, but it's still better than messed up layouts... :|

I think I'm starting to see a pattern here... :P

Windows/Mac: it works
Linux: it doesn't work

Actually, it doesn't seem as straightforward:

Latest Firefox & unknown version of Webkit (Midori Browser) on Linux: broken
Old (ESR) Firefox on Linux: it works

Also, some background-colored commas make it through, and maybe they are what breaks the layout

The commas were defined as transparent in the CSS (I think they've always been there). Anyway, I got rid of them... can you check if that solved anything?

Now the columns display incorrectly on my mobile. Previously, there were 2 columns on mobile and 3 on computer, but now it is the other way around. And because of three columns on my mobile, I cannot see the third one almost at all. Could you fix that? I use Unilang primarily on my mobile phone and two of the subforums I use are in the third column: Estonian (which I also moderate) and Indonesian. Now in order to use these subforums, I should use computer.
