So basically here's what came out of the polls so far:

    The flags will stay
 The Hungarian, Finnish and Estonian forums will be kept unchanged
 The Sami forum will be merged with minority Uralic languages (name and flag(s) to be defined)
 The Hebrew forum will remain as it is
 The NAIL forum won't be split

It's not so obvious when it comes to Caucasian and other Semitic languages, though... :hmm:

Unfortunately, I still want a NAIL split.

As I recall saying, I'd be the tie breaker in the Hebrew/Semitic poll. I just want to see what the feeling is on having language family forums or just general/geographic merger forums before making a determination.

Georgian/Caucasian may require another round or something.

"Finno-Ugric" is kind of an outdated term. There's nothing wrong with just "Uralic languages."

Same. I'm also concerned about whether having family-specific forums is going to be restricted to Eurasian languages or not (and even if it is, whether it's going to be that way for good reason).
Georgian/Caucasian may require another round or something.

I feel the same way about Georgian/Caucasian as I do about Hebrew/Semitic.

IMO either we should split up the Caucasian languages by family, making Georgian into a Kartvelian subforum, or we should make one big Caucasian forum.

In general, whether I agree with splitting up languages by family depends not only on what others think but also on how consistently we're doing that and why.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Ideally we should be consistent.

"Finno-Ugric" is kind of an outdated term. There's nothing wrong with just "Uralic languages."

"Finno-Ugric" is actually still very commonly-used, not outdated. But it does have some disadvantages: sometimes the Samoyedic languages are excluded from "Finno-Ugric" and it has various spellings in English ("Finno-Ugric," "Finno-Ugrian," and less often "Fenno-Ugric," etc.). So although it's often used, it's less consistent in spelling and meaning. I'm fine with "Uralic languages" or with using both.

Edit:
Interesting: I just tried a Google search to see which terms are most common.
In English, "Uralic languages" has four times as many hits as "Finno-Ugric languages."
In Estonian, it's the other way around: "soome-ugri keelte" has three times as many hits as "uurali keelte."
There are also recently-published and soon-to-be-published academic materials in English that use both terms.

OK, the Uralic Languages forum is now a reality (I've moved all flagged threads there as well) :yeah!:

Also, the "Creole Languages" forum has changed to "Creoles and Pidgins"

Judging from your message there Vijay, I thought I'd put this link here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=52854#p1104809

Feel free to answer here or there.

I wrote:How would you like to settle this whole language family vs geographic grouping, Vijay-san?

Poll or just discussion?

Vijay wrote:It will have to be a gradual discussion since it's about all the languages of the world, not just the Caucasian ones. That doesn't mean you (or anybody else :P) can't still make multiple polls, too, though!

Just to be clearer, I meant the whole thing. Not just for Caucasian languages.

Hence why I'm moving it here.

And, once again, I wholeheartedly agree.

Yeah, I know you mean the whole thing. :)

I'll see if I can talk about some of the stuff we'd need to consider in more detail (i.e. beyond what I said here) on Sunday and/or Monday since that's when my weekend is.

Ok. Sounds like a plan.

I just hope it turns out to be more than just us two talking now that the others got their Uralic subforum. :P
