Text converters in posts (X-SAMPA and others)

Postby Ser » 2017-12-20, 23:11

Would anyone want to have an X-SAMPA to IPA converter easily available in posts again?

What about any other such converters? We used to have one so that you could convert ASCII characters (or certain combinations of them) into Arabic and other scripts too. For example, you could type 3rby, select it, press a button and then get عربي.

Honestly, that converter used to annoy me so much. Who even uses X-SAMPA? :?

Um, I do! I find it much more fluid to type out a transcription in X-SAMPA then convert it to IPA.

Unfortunately that's one of the features that got lost in the forum migration. It was sort of replaced by the IPA virtual keyboard.

It might be reimplemented though (I don't understand if you're volunteering or just asking :P)

Oh, we have an IPA virtual keyboard in the forum? Nice, I never noticed this. :)

Speaking of the virtual keyboards, is there a way to add any thing to them?

Not just IPA. There's also Cyrillic, Greek and Latin (with all sorts of diacritics and special characters).

I suppose so. IIRC, the virtual keyboards were developed by TheStrayCat

I was just thinking it would be nice to have the x with a circumflex over it for typing Aleut. :P

I mean, we have g circumflex.

Me. I use Aszev's X-SAMPA converter on aveneca.com for all my IPA needs, but I was thinking others here could find such a converter and other converters useful?

I'll find out how to add it.

It would be balls to have a Hebrew and Arabic virtual keyboard (or text converter) as well. With vowel points, of course. (And yes, I know an Arabic converter was already suggested)

So what appeals to y'all about X-SAMPA? Just the fact that it uses ASCII characters or what?

I just use the keyboard or (on a certain other forum) this.

I learned X-SAMPA back in the day when it was necessary to use it (2006, when I started going on a language forum), because lots of people did not have Unicode coverage of IPA characters on their computer, and, having overcome the learning curve, it's just faster / more efficient to use than a virtual keyboard.

Have you tried the Hebrew qwerty layout? It's really easy to use and even the vowel points are intuitive to type.

Exactly. :) As I said, fluid. No need to search for and click the character I need on the screen, or revert to flip-phone style character selection. I just type and let the converter make it pretty.

Which layout if that? I just have "Hebrew" and "Hebrew (Standard)" on my machine natively. (Win 10)

Maybe it's only available for Mac users... :? It's called Hebrew (qwerty).

Anyway, I find it awesome because I don't need to relearn where all the letters are. For instance:

ql - קל
anglit - אנגלית
mdbr - מדבר
shift + a = ָ
shift + e = ֵ

and so on.

Maybe there's a way to install it for Windows users, I don't know.

Edit: apparently, there isn't.

So it's very similar to the Google Input keyboard for Hebrew. :P

I also have a Biblical Hebrew keyboard installed, so it's not like I couldn't use those. But I'm not always on my computer, so....
