Michael wrote:It's unnecessary for it to be listed as "Katharevousa", no matter that that appellation is more common, because most anybody who can read Greek will be able to read the autonym that says as much.

Couldn't you make that same argument for most of the languages in the list, though?

At this point, I have my opinion and you have yours, so I guess we'll just have to let Luís arbitrate this matter.

If my opinion means anything to anyone, I see no reason to start ceating our own designations. If there is a term in common usage, it makes sense to stick to it in my eyes.

[sarcasm]Yeah. Like Farsi, for example.[/sarcasm]

Yeah, that is why it's called "Persian", and not "Farsi". Granted, "Farsi" is gaining traction in English, but it hasn't displaced the old standard. And that's not even like the English usage of "Puristic Greek" vs. "Katharevousa"! There is no other widely accepted term but "Katharevousa".

In theory, yes, of course. In practice, however, it seems "Farsi" (not to mention "Dari") has largely won out over "Persian" among Anglophones, and I've lost hope that English-speakers will ever grow out of this habit. I mean, when even esteemed universities have begun using the "Farsi" appellation, that's when you know you've passed the point of no return.

EDIT: You added further to your post, essentially ninja-ing me. :P

I'm pretty sure "Farsi" has not won out over "Persian" by this point in English. We've kind of talked about the whole Farsi vs. Persian deal before. In addition to what księżycowy said, there's the problem that native speakers of the language are sometimes strongly opposed to calling it "Farsi" in English even if that's what they would call it in Persian, since the [f] in "Farsi" is the product of influence from Arabic.

Fixed

All Japanese dialects are now officially gone! :partyhat:

Could we make language codes for the dialects of Komi? There's a used FSC song in the dialect Komi-Zyrian. It's also called just Zyrian.

And here I thought we were trying to be economical with the list. :P

Maybe you can simply use Komi?
(I have no idea how different those dialects are or if it makes sense to add them)

Especially if they're just being used in the forum song contest.

Fair enough, I guess I can do that. And I'll just specify the variety in the descriptor, since anyway the varieties would probably have the same flag. I did think about the economizing of the list, but figured I'd post a request anyway and see the feedback.

By the way, are the Language List and the My languages lists the same? All my requests, even though they've been made in this thread, are really for the Language List, since that's what I use to determine the lang code, etc.

From what I understand, they are one in the same. Everything on the language list is also on the drop down list for our profiles after all.

That's what I thought; hence the posting in here. :)
