Wait, you're learning Atayal!

Since when? And are you still learning it?

I guess he started learning it since I "unearthed" the 9-level learning resources?

No, it was one of my supplementary languages at the end of last year. :) I'm not learning it anymore, though. (Not at the moment, anyway).

It isn't.

I wonder two things.

1. Should the alphabetizing be based off the native name or the English name?

2. Should we group languages (like Swiss German is listed under German, or Old Irish is listed under Irish), or should we just set them free and find Irish under 'i' and Old Irish under 'o'? (It's kinda weird to have both alphabetizing and grouping, but that's me. :P )

1. The native name is often contrived anyway; not all languages have a native name per se. So I'd go with the English one.

2. I'd group them.

It definitely is, in the language list that I can see from my computer.

For question 1, I'm pulling a Vijay and not having any strong feelings one way or another. I'm just curious what the general thought is on the forum.

Why?

Because it makes more thematic sense, I guess? Otherwise, you could stick "Old" in front of all kinds of languages and they'd all be listed under "O." It just makes more sense IMO to group Old Irish with modern Irish rather than with Old English, Old High German, Old Church Slavonic...:P

It's not on mine...

Oh, that's not the one that I meant. I meant the list that you see when you want to add a new language to your profile.

We've had this discussion before... :P

It's impossible to alphabetically order languages when they all use different scripts... ;) For instance, would Русский come before or after 汉语?

Should be fixed by now. The two lists are supposed to be ordered the same way.

I think Wikipedia uses the approach of alphabetically ordering the Romanized versions of the native names. (So in theory, Русский would come after 汉语, but Wikipedia uses 中文 instead, so that comes after almost everything else :P).

Maybe. I guess i forgot. :P

The reason I ask is, what's up with the ordering on the language list page then? (Not the drop down list, the page Vijay screenshot.)

AFAIK they sort it based on the code, not romanized alphabet.

A random article, 日本語 is there as /ja/, not as /nihongo/. You can click "edit links" below the language list to see it.

Ah, OK, that makes more sense!

I don't think the varieties of a given language are (meant to be) listed in any particular order (maybe the order in which they were added? Idk). That's just the impression I get, though.

There is something wrong with the list. It is not ordered alphabetically. What French, English and German do almost at the end of the list? Belarusian is between two Chinese languages, Romani and Serbian are listed under Japanese as if they were dialects of it.

And Wu is also listed as if it were a dialect of Japanese. :P
