If we're adding Southern, it feels as though we should add Northern too. Or do you guys disagree?

If we add Northern and Southern separately, then why would anyone need to just use Vietnamese?

Someone who is learning both could use it.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Even if regional varieties are added, we always keep the "parent language" as well. A user can simply add "English" to their profile without specifying if it's British English, American English, Australian English, etc. The same for Vietnamese.

Not to mention there are Central dialects too, if I'm not mistaken. And, no, I'm not suggesting we add those.

Really, I think one Vietnamese entry suits us, despite dialectal differences. But I seem to be out voted here.

That's true; I forgot about that.

Eh, personally I don't care. I'm just going to use the catch all "Vietnamese" entry anyway.

In other news, I started that poll I said I'd start about the naming procedure.

Just replace Nam with Bắc (northern) and Trung for the central Vietnamese, but I'm not voting for the addition of the latter. Unless there's a demand for it.

Can you change the Vietnamese Southern to Southern Vietnamese and get rid of the tieng viet part. Too many parentheses? Looks fugly.

Actually, there's more difference between Central Vietnamese and the other two varieties than between Northern and Southern...
If Southern Vietnamese was American English and Northern Vietnamese was British English, Central Vietnamese would be Scots...

There's also a lot of different Central Vietnamese varieties IIUC since you have South-Central vs. Hue vs. some other ones.

That's what I've thought this whole time. Yes, there are differences, but they are mostly contained to pronunciation and some vocabulary.

It's a can of worms....

Also, concidering it's Vietnamese, shouldn't the Tieng Viet part kinda stay? :hmm:

Two additions, which can be added after my pill is finished, if you want Luís (which is just as well, because I have to hunt down a flag or two):

English Name: Seediq
Native Name: Taroko
ISO: trv
Flag:

English Name: Amis
Native Name: Pangcah
ISO: ami
Flag:

This is in large part thanks to Vijay translating lessons from Chinese for both me and atalarikt.

You do mean after your poll is finished, right?
