I'm very interested in learning Slovak, and about Slovakia (which knowing Slovak would help)...

The main reason I joined this forum, was because not many learning materials, etc. exist for Slovak.

I have a few very basic textbooks to start me off...

- Colloquial Slovak by James Naughton (1997, 1st Edition)
- 'Veľký obrázkový slovnik-slovensko-anglicko-nemecký' (Picture Book that looks like it is aimed at young children, but is useful for beginners like me!!)
- 100 Most Common Slovak Verbs (Unknown Author, covers basic 'conjugations' :D , but has no examples of how to use them  )

I think gaining a basic fluency (at least) in Slovak would be a 'rare / unusual' (for an Aussie) and valuable Skill to have!!

I'm currently looking forward to studying some Slovak. Slavic culture seems very primeval to me, in a way, which is something I love. Also, the Karpaty must be beautiful!

I would definitely be interested in learning Slovak. I have researched enough to find ancestors on my father's side of the family going back directly to the village of Bohdanovce, Slovakia just outside the city of Kosice. If anyone has highly rated and reviewed Slovak resources available or at hand, please send me a private message about it. Thanks. :D

I would say http://slovake.eu/en/ is a good starting starting point for learning Slovak. It’s said to teach you the language up to A2 level (although I haven’t confirmed it thouroughly yet, checked only a few first lessons, but it looks interesting.) Of course for serious learning more resources will be needed, but I’d surely give it a go :)

I've nearly completed the A1 course on Slovake.eu

The most advanced things I can say at the moment are things like:

Moja priateľka vratila do školy. Som veľmi štasťny!!
Translation: My friend (fem) returned to school. I'm very happy!!

Someone with more knowledge / experience with Slovak, please correct me if I'm wrong...

... but in my mind that statement (esp. priateľka) means / implies:

My friend, that is female, that I [seem to] have a somewhat "intimate connection" with, returned to school. I'm very happy!!

My understanding is less than impressive though (at the moment).

I've found these gems (to improve listening comprehension) on Youtube though:
http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX83ZiO ... YXw/videos
http://www.youtube.com/user/palycka/videos

One thing I plan to do eventually, is to get Slovak Newspapers, and put sentences into Anki (Google it if necessary) to hopefully expand my Vocab, improve understanding, etc.

In combination with Slovake.eu - I'm using Anki, with Pictures, to learn some of the words (others I think require exposure to the language to understand - such as some of the prepositions).

Last time I checked Anki was free for PCs / Laptops. It does cost a noticeable amount for iPad, iPhone etc. though.

You missed a reflexive pronoun there. i.e. Moja priatelka SA vratila do skoly. Other than that, perfect!

Uslo ti tam zvratne zameno. teda 'Moja priatelka SA vratila do skoly.' Okrem toho je to dokonale!

That is correct. In my mind, 'priatelka' always means 'girlfriend'. If you just want to say a 'female friend' you would use 'kamarátka' or 'kamoška' which is the colloquial form of 'kamarátka'.

Správne. V mojej hlave 'priatelka' vzdy znamena 'girlfriend'. Ak chces povedat len 'female friend' pouzil by si 'kamaratka' alebo 'kamoska' - co je hovorovy tvar od 'kamaratka'.

Hi!!
I'm full Slovakian and I would like to help anyone with learning Slovak language. I really appreciate foreigners who learn our language! I know how hard it is compare to English for example. I also know English prettygood since I spend one year in the US like an exchange student.
I'm looking forward to teaching any of you! :)

Wondering if anyone can help me identify the correct way to pronounce and spell a old saying that supposedly translates to "Sh*t or get off the pot." My wife's grandfather was Slovakian and used to say this to her all the time. To her recollection it was pronounced leshi tobeshi. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
