New Slovak Website! - slovake.eu

Postby zeme » 2011-05-03, 14:00

A new website for learning Slovak has been launched by the creators of the Esperanto website lernu.net. It's still in its infancy, but worth keeping an eye on.

Link: slovake.eu

Looks nice.
I just snooped around though. Anyway, I got a question for Slovaks.
The voice on the site pronounced veľmi like /velmi/, that is, the ľ is different then in ľad. Why is that?

 I had no idea it was supposed to be "veľmi". I always say "velmi", maybe there are dialectal differences? Could you post a link to the sound clip? I couldn't find it.

Hello,
There is no difference between "ľ " in the word ľad and "ľ " in the word veľmi. Simple rule "Read as you see". Exceptions are de, te, ne, le, di, ti, ni, li... you can find them on the site as well. Although, some people do pronounce these words hard, mainly in western slovakia, it is not grammatically correct.

I do think that it's by far the worst in Bratislava. I mean, they have lad and not ľad in their soft drinks... oh well... it annoyed me when I was there, and still does occasionally but well... not much I can do, except to remember to have my soft ľ where they're supposed to be. :)

So...

I'm currently doing 'Course 1' on this site, and plan to move on to 'Course 2' afterwards.

How far would completing this website take the student?

Would completing this website give enough understanding of Slovak to start learning on your own, from reading, watching TV, listening to music, etc.?

Thanks
