Phonetic spellings needed, please

Postby daisy » 2005-08-20, 19:39

Hi,

I would like to know, please, how to pronounce the following words:

Khristos rodyvsya!
Slavite Yoho!
Boze Rany
Pysanky=PEH-sahn-keh OR peh-SAHN-key
(As you can see, I found two spellings on the internet for pysanky, and am seekin assistance because I have no idea which one is correct!)

(By phonetic I mean--for instance, the word Hello is pronounced HELL-oh. I would like to know the phonetic spelling and the proper syllable stress, if it's not too much trouble.)

If someone could please help me, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!

daisy

That's true. I know how to pronounce it, but I don't know how to write it down so that it sounds right if you pronounce it the English way.

I apologize! I saw a lot of people viewing it...

Boze Rany is literally translated as "God's Wounds." According to my research, "Ukrainian and Polish Catholics tap each other gently on Palm Sunday with palms. For them, the custom of Boze Rany ("God's Wounds") serves as a telling reminder of Christ's scourging."

I don't know what is involved in making a sound file, but if that's easier, it would also be easier for me to 'translate' it into phonetic English...

Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

I think, it'll be not easy to translate Ukrainian "и" in English phonetic (it's like Russian "ы", if you know). I mean "Khrystos rodyvsia", "rány"...

Hi Vicza,

Hmmmm...I'd be willing to give it a try...An approximate phonetic spelling is what I'm striving for, as I know I won't get it perfect...

Well, they say, that Ukrainian "и" should be pronounced as in English image.

BTW, I am not an Ukrainian, but AFAIK "Bozhe Rany" is a wrong spelling. In Ukrainian it should be "Божії рани", which should be pronounced like "Bozhii rany".

Thanks again!
