Aslian languages

Postby aaakknu » 2019-09-09, 11:40

This is a thread for Aslian languages, a group of Austroasiatic languages spoken in Malaysia. I have nothing to write right now, but hopefully I will post something later)
It's more of a wanderlust for me, because I decided to focus on Austronesian languages this year)
I know that Vijay has something to say about any language in the world, so I will just wait for him to post something here

They are quite diverse and not always classified in a consistent way (perhaps because "asli" simply means "native" or "original" in Malay). Here are a couple links I had saved, although none of them have much info:

Some phrases in Semelai translated into Malay
Some phrases in Temiar translated into Malay

Thank you so much, Linguaphile!
I will also add something later, I remember finding some papers, although don't remember where.

So, here are some papers:

Jah Hut - a short description
A grammar of Semelai - there are some pages available there

I will look for some more later.

Looks like a loan word from the Arabic اصلي "original".

It is! The issue is that "Aslian" means a subgroup of Mon-Khmer languages, but it also simply means "indigenous" language, so sometimes the same term is used a broader sense to include languages that don't fit into that linguistic subgroup.

Oh, what kind of languages outside said subgroup are sometimes included into Aslian?

Sorry for not posting anything here until now btw.
