They are synonyms but aren't used in the same region, are they?
Me speaking the Northern Vietnamese dialect myself, I say "thìa" when referring to a spoon. But when I said "thìa" to a South-Vietnamese person she didn't understand. When she said "muỗng" I didn't know what it was, until I realized "muỗng" is used in South-Vietnam while "thìa" is used in North-Vietnam for "spoon".
