vietnamese music

Postby kman1 » 2009-06-11, 3:06

Can someone recommend some good Vietnamese music to listen to? With Vietnamese, I am fully aware that my pronunciation is not very good but I think that listening to good music in Vietnamese will help me get more accustom to the sounds and also help me to imitate the sounds better. At least that's my plan.

I am a very active person so some music that I like 1. music that makes you dance (i.e. hip hop/breakdance music) (i’m NOT really that much into rap because of the absurd meaningless lyrics) 2. music that has A LOT of feeling and by this I mean music in which the singer really gets into and gives it their all (i.e. african american gospel) 3. music similar to 80’s/90’s love songs (i.e. earth wind and fire, luther vandross, etc.)

Hopefully you list songs that I can find on the internet and sample. Thanks! I can upload any songs of mine if you’re not familiar with any of the artists above. :)

Can't help you on this one, because I myself try to stay away from it. As far as possible. I voluntarily listen to Vietnamese music like once or twice a year.

I very rarely hear the soul in Vietnamese music, and certainly not the nowadays kind. That's to assume young Vietnamese "songwriters" create their.. hemm... brainchildren from scratch and not copy melodies from Hongkong or mainland China.

Overall Vietnam tends to produce pop songs that if you ever encounter you won't see much artistry, professionalism or modernism in them - or even emotions and intelligence for that matter - which leads to zero exportability and global appeal. Now that alleged authors have Chinese and Korean templates to apply, things are bound to get much worse. Rare exceptions mostly include works of Trịnh Công Sơn (basically Vietnam's version of John Lennon in the late 60s) which are known in Japan and revered by older generations of urban Viets, Californian or homeland.

Dance music? You won't find that stuff homegrown here. Other "delinquent" genres like hiphop and metal are emerging but still... underground, and tbh, not any less lousy.

I have to agree with Draven on this one. Vietnamese music is shit. For the most part it's tacky, poorly made, and poorly performed. And the music videos are absolutely laughable. I don't think I've ever liked a Vietnamese song right off the bat because it was good. However, there are a few songs I've grown to like over time. I suspect I've grown to like them because I've (involuntarily) heard them dozens of times and they've taken on some nostalgic meaning for me. And, they're sung with heart. That's one good thing I can say about some Vietnamese music.

Without further ado, here are my picks for the least unlistenable Vietnamese music:
Nguyen Vu - Dong Song Tinh Yeu
Dam Vinh Hung - Tinh oi xin ngu yen
Dam Vinh Hung - Binh minh se mang em di

If your ear drums still work after that, here's some more for laughs:

Typical wannabe modern trash:
Anh Mat Dua Tinh

Remake of the theme song from Winter Sonata:
Ngay Chia Tay

I don't think that's possible. Things can only go up at this point.

Well, I avoid Viet songs as well.

My ex loves Như Quỳnh.

I personally can't stand her.

You never know... Eight years back hits were still like this - arrangement and recording techniques were trashy as always, but at least melodies were bearable. Now they appear to have done away with the melody part as well. The potential is there: who knows what crime they're gonna commit next?

Hmm how about you guys post some popular Vietnamese hits that match the hip hop style I listed above?? I think I might like some of that music. I say this because I listened to that song the Draven posted regarding terrible Vietnamese music and actually I kinda liked that song. I mean it wasn't like top notch but I thought it was good catchy enough to use to sing to myself to improve my pronunciation. well, i don't know, maybe i'm the lone person who might actually like corny Vietnamese music :silly:

I like Vietnamese music too, just not the corny songs :D

Have some suggestions for ya.

1. Songs with good beats:
Try this and this

2. Moody songs:
Nỗi nhớ mùa đông,
Niệm khúc cuối,
Một mình
Đêm nằm mơ phố
There are a lot more... But I don't know whether you like these. They all sound a bit old & nostalgia :D

- Teen pop:
Câu chuyện mùa thu,
CHiếc khăn gió ấm,
Giọt sương và chiếc lá
Cơn gió lạ

Note that all of them are in Northern accent :D I know you aim for the Southern one so they may not be of help much.
Tôi kể người nghe chuyện Phố-trong-sông,
chuyện những mùa Đông đi qua thời con gái.
Bóng đổ dài, bước chân người mê mải
Gió chở mùa về,
hoang hoải cả giấc mơ..

Songs in Vietnamese are generally sung in a generic, "standard" Northern dialect, just like how sung English is mostly non-rhotic regardless of where the singer comes from.

I listen to a lot of Asian music, but Vietnamese music is especially bad. There are only a few songs that I can possibly recommend you check out, and they are the only Vietnamese songs that rest on any of my hard drives, despite the fact that I speak Vietnamese.

*First one is probably the best song, in my opinion, out of all of them.

1) Thầm Gọi Tên Anh by Minh Tuyet (there's also a really cute version of this song sung by a pretty Vietnamese girl on YouTube that has been translated into English. It's very well done, you should check it out and try to focus on the song and not all too much on the singer xD).

2) Chuot Yeu Gao by Pham Thanh Thao

3) Goodbye by Pham Thanh Hang (I don't think she's a full fledged singer, but actually a model, or some unknown Vietnamese singer with the same name as the famous Vietnamese model. The song is R&Bish, and is pretty good for the beginning, but it seriously derails when she tries to do those long extended notes. She's not a very talented singer, to say the least).

Wow, I like the English lyrics !!!
I don't know why when it comes to emotional matters, Vietnamese usually sounds kind of... :? creepy.

If you want modern V POP that is actually like, new stuff on the scene and actual decent quality music videos that is like up to date with the rest of the first world:

Look up Phuong Vy... particularly her song: "Bao Loi Yeu"
