Oh I didn't notice this... The music then was so good wasn't it? I keep having the feeling that I'm listening to the Beatles singing in Vietnamese. Really like the two first songs (performed by Elvis Phuong, right?

Elvis didn't perform on those two songs, but he did sing on some other tracks. I believe Tung Giang sang the first song. They weren't songs from the Beatles.

Draven post rồi, nhưng mình thích Mỹ Tâm quá nên post (thêm) lần nữa / post lại.
(Breakdown: Draven post already, but I like Mỹ Tâm so much so post (extra) time still / post again.)

Note that the particle "nữa" is close to untranslatable in English, but it can be likened to De. noch, so (thêm) lần nữa is equivalent to noch einmal / nochmals.

And, on the song topic, THIS. :totalshock: (My lower jaw performed one of the longest drops in my life when I watched that.)

I rly can't understand what's so big deal abt foreigners singing in Vietnamese. I mean, Vietnamese has been singing in English, French, Chinese, Laos... for at least a couple decades now. We covered Phantom of the Opera since the 60s. And I doubt we appeared on TV & got famous like Joe Strawberry did because of ability to use a foreign language.

Inferiority complex, don't you think?

And.. 'nữa', I think its equivalent could be 'more' or 'again'. 'Một lần nữa' - 'one more time'.

You listen to Trịnh Công Sơn too? :)

I wouldn't call it that, because inferiority complex implies bagging and slanting others who you know are better than you, just so you can feel good about yourself. But I think that's basically what it is - positive inferiority complex. Vietnamese as a language has never received any noticeable attention from the world, see? When something very rare happens, it's worthy of a jaw drop. Simple as that.

abcdefg wrote:You listen to Trịnh Công Sơn too? :)

Well, I think a Vietnamese person who don't appreciate Trịnh music is like an American who has never checked out Elvis Presley. I'm not condemning anyone, just saying such people are missing out a very important part of their country's music.

Don't know about you but I wouldn't nominate a teen pop hit to represent a country's music. That type of song has an easy, cookie-cutter romanticism to them that weights nothing at all (And Vietnam's media production industry doesn't exactly scream "modern".) If a modern song is called for, why not something with more artistic flare, like Ly Cà Phê Ban Mê, Sắc Màu, Trống Vắng or even the almost-mediocre Yêu Thương Nhạt Nhòa (Well, its video clip shows professionalism at least, and that rarely happens in Vietnam)? Quite a few songs would qualify actually. But still, I think the (pre-1975) Trịnh classics show more creativity, passion and gravitas then the sorry current state of Vietnamese music ever will. His early songs contain in them this melancholy and understated intellectualism that leave the right audience in awe. I wouldn't put the two on a same level.

Thích Nỗi nhớ mùa đông của Phú Quang, mà do 1 bạn nam đệm guitar & hát.

Don't think that's the point. Not even close.

Phải công nhận là rất có khiếu (+đẹp trai, but I digress).

Okay I'm spamming lol..
