Hmoob (Hmong Language)苗语

Postby Laoshu505000 » 2008-12-15, 4:39

Hello everyone!

I thought maybe it would be a good idea to post something here about the Hmong language. I've been studying it for a little over a week now and I think it's an interesting language. It's not so useful, but still fun to learn. Perhaps there're some people here who're interested in this language. I still have two other links to post here. I'm still waiting for them to process! Enjoy it!

Their orthography uses consonant letters to denote tones... Funny...

Laoshu50500, could you tell us how you learnt Hmong? Did you find native speakers to talk to to, or do you use some kind of course?
These are the only online materials I was able to find.

Hello there my friend, thanks for the message.

Well, first I had to find some resources to work from. The resources that were posted up on the 'Learn any language' site are good. I just checked those out and I use most of those resources that were posted. I have this other site I use that wasn't posted there though. I will post that up for the people who are serious about learning Hmong.

Yes, I've found several communities online where I can practice Hmong. That's another essential thing when learning any foreign language. I've found chat rooms, forums etc. I like to make journals likewise other languages to practice grammar and stuff also.

Hmong isn't really a difficult language once you get the hang of it.You could actually learn how to read t in 1 week if you're willing to put the time in.The original script 'Phaj Hauj' is another story. You would really have to have interest for learning this script. It's not as popular as RPA (Romanized Popular Alphabet) but it's still used by a small group of people. They even have a school out in California where they teach the children how to read and write Phaj Hauj script. I will post that link up as well.

I didn't realize there were others willing to learn Hmong on the LAL website. I will make sure I post other sources that weren't posted there as well. If you have any other questions about Hmong, I will be willing to help you out. Take care my friend.

I also use a program called 'Shared Talk' It's basically a chat room with A LOT of foreign rooms. Man, they have A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of Hmongs there!! If you're serious about downloading it and need help for finding the rooms, I will be glad to to that as well.

I think it would be helpful if you provided a transcription on here. It's a bit easier to take notes.
