Singular ما

Postby lksaltern » 2019-05-10, 0:09

If a single man refers to himself as ما, is he emphasizing his own importance or is he showing humility? Or can it be one or the other depending on the situation?

Thanks!

In general, distance connotes formality and respect in Persian, whereas directness/closeness shows familiarity; therefore, referring to someone with the plural (شما) is more respectful than the singular (تو), and the same principle holds for referring to oneself with the plural (ما) rather than the singular (من).

So it's more a question of formality and distance than humility or self-importance. That makes perfect sense. Thanks again, Eskandar!
