Ooh yay! Lots of new idioms and things for me to learn from that song! (Also I was kind of thrown off by how things are spelled just because I'm not familiar enough with it. That's why I got confused between to and tu; I thought 'you are' was spelled تو ای and thought maybe تویی was something else).

All right, time for my non-Iranian song as usual, except this time, it's not by an Afghan or Tajik singer; it's by Mohammed Rafi! This is a short ghazal in what I guess is Classical Persian, but intriguingly enough, I'm not aware of anyone ever having sung it other than Rafi, and I have no idea who the author of the ghazal is. I hope it's at least reasonably grammatical Persian. The lyrics are written in the video itself, but I've also copied and pasted them from the video description just in case it helps. There's even a translation in the comments, but I think it might have left part of the lyrics out, so I'm attempting my own translation instead from scratch:

I thought 'you are' was spelled تو ای and thought maybe تویی was something else).

Now you know! تو ای would be read as 'to ey' . If a word ends in [u] then an attached ی will be written connected to the word:
آهو deer - آهویی 'a deer' (indefinite) or 'you are a deer'
تو you - تویی 'it's you'

When As long as your disheveled hair was in the gentle wind
You know what things happened in my crazy heart. (Or maybe 'do you know...'?) either one works. But rather than "crazy" heart (implying a permanent state), the sense is "crazed" heart (frenzied, agitated; a temporary state)

His cockscomb flower still seemed to be in the gentle wind's bosom. embrace [maybe this is nitpicking but seemed to make more sense in English this way

On the night of separation, you were there, and God was there. the sense is: if anyone was conscious of how my heart burned on the night of separation, it was just you (the candle) and God

غم - (can figuratively mean love in addition to sorrow?) yes
ناز - beauty and grace? (as well as flirting) yes, kind of a difficult cultural concept to succinctly translate. I would compare it in some ways to the Chinese sajiao or Korean aegyo.
سبک - soft (in addition to style) also "light" (opposite of heavy)

In Malayalam, we have a verb കൊഞ്ചിക്കുക [kɔnˈd͡ʒikʲʊga] that seems to refer to something similar to sajiao/aegyo. I used to think of it as being like baby talk except addressed to adults, although my dad didn't really agree. I honestly had no idea similar terms existed in any other language!

Anyway, since I did Shahram Kashani's version of "Khaterkhah" as my last Iranian song translation, I decided to make my next one the original version by Ahdieh from the movie of the same name! I know this is kind of cheating because some of the lines in the modernized version are taken from the song itself, but don't worry, there are plenty of other lines in the original that I've probably mistranslated in this post. I found the lyrics online (on a link that I decided not to post here because it's one of those sites that starts playing loud music as soon as you click on it, and it doesn't even play the right song! ):

I know there are shameful lovers. I think the sense here is "I know that being a lover has shame to it." Same structure in the next line, too.

Anything with حال can be tricky because it's been used in many different ways over time, so there's a great amount of semantic drift even looking at the uses of حال in Persian over various periods of time, let alone when we get into other languages like Turkish.

Thanks! It was definitely one of the easiest songs I've used in this group so far.

I've been doing a few new things to hopefully improve my Persian a bit. Now that I've pretty much exhausted the first-grade textbook I have, I've decided to try to get new vocabulary from the طوطی نامه instead. I've also been watching bits and pieces of a few Iranian and Afghan movies over the past few days. I found all of the following online: the oldest Iranian movie/talking picture (Lor Girl, 1934), the oldest Afghan movie (Like Eagles, 1967), an Afghan movie with English subtitles called Panaah (2008), The Cow (1969), and A Party in Hell (1956), the oldest Iranian movie I managed to find with subtitles (in English). There are various languages spoken in Panaah, but at least the predominant language in all of these movies appears to be (some variety of) Persian.

Of course, I'm still using two extra songs as usual! (The ten words after the new vocab from the songs are from the طوطی نامه). The extra Iranian song I'm using this time is "Ghoghaye Setaregan" by Parvin:

I think maybe اصلح الله شانه? In English, they seem to translate this as "may God amend his condition!"

I think maybe اصلح الله شانه? In English, they seem to translate this as "may God amend his condition!"

Ah, that makes more sense. As you can see it's Arabic. Very often in Sufi texts after mentioning the name of an important saint, or patron, etc., there will be an Arabic phrase like this one (or others). "May God amend his condition" is fine as a translation; we could also read it as "may God further his honor/dignity" which is more laudatory.

Admittedly, I'm kind of cheating this time, because I happen to have a Russian translation...I just don't have an English one! (But even the Russian translation doesn't always help much ). My attempt at a translation:

You said, "I've come tonight to tell you that I have to go."
You said, "I want to tell you: These days, I am a traveler."
"I have to go" was only an empty phrase for you.
If only you had seen: My heart had fallen underneath your feet!
Perhaps it wasn't your sin; perhaps it was my fault.
Perhaps this is the consequence of falling in love like this.

Travel is always a story of leaving and loneliness.
Don't tell me that separation is also a destiny in life!
One person always leaves, and the other becomes alone.
He leaves; he leaves a world of memories behind him.
An unfamiliar heart always remains a lonely corner.
One person (is) a traveler, and the other remains on this side of the world.

I can't work up the nerve to say, "Don't forget my heart!"
But without you leaving, life leaves my tired body.
Stay for an alley that is awash in tears without you!
A wet cloud from its sky is the clouds of my eyes.

Stay for a home that needs the fragrance of your body!
Stay for a window that loves...seeing you!
