Usage of the verb دلتنگ شدن and a question about using را

Postby debbiedowner » 2014-12-29, 0:39

I know the verb دلتنگ شدن means to miss someone or something, but I'm not exactly sure how I would use it. I know that it roughly translates as "the heart becomes tight", but I'm not sure about the right way to use it with a subject and an object pronoun. Is it similar to other verbs that have دل in them? Would "I miss him" be something along the lines of از او دلم تنگ می شود ?

My second question isn't really related to the first, but when the direct object is somebody's name, do I need to use را?

Yes, you can say از او دلتنگ شدم but a much more common idiomatic way to say it is دلم برایش (برای او) تنگ شد. This can be used for anything (eg. دل حسن برای تهران تنگ شد' Hasan misses Tehran').

Yes, you do need را when the direct object is someone's name.
دیروز حسن را دیدم 'Yesterday I saw Hasan'

A note here: از او دلتنگ شدم means he upset/disappointed me
