Hey Ali, my girlfriend is a really big Kamran and Hooman fan! She plays this song all the time:

Kamran and Hoomaan - Man Toro Mikham
http://www.imeem.com/people/avPQGc/musi ... ro_mikham/

This is a really nice ghazal by Habib Qaderi from his live album

It sounds like a Hindu song to my ear.

The music tradition of Afghanistan, especially ghazal (I think it called 'gazel' in Turkish), has a long shared history with the music of South Asia, so a lot of Afghan music, especially Afghan ghazals are hard to tell apart from South Asian music (unless you know the languages!).

btw: You should say 'Hindi', which refers to the culture of traditional Hindustan, not 'Hindu', which refers only to the Hindu religion.

:( I am so absent-minded!

Yes, we have gazals, too. The language of gazals contain lots of Arabic and Persian elements. Although they are getting a bit out-of-date, there are still some gazals people like listening, like this one:

http://www.imeem.com/people/12--KTb/mus ... ber_gazel/

Another gazal from Urfa, a city where there is a significant gazal culture. Kazancı Bedih, the most popular gazal singer of Urfa, is singing this gazal:

Wow! Turkish ghazals sound very interesting! Especially for me, since the only ghazals I have ever listened to are in the Asian style. It has a very minimalist style and sounds very raw. Do you have the lyrics/translation for the 2nd link that you sent?

Yes, I have found the lyrics and tried to translate but I must confess that it may have mistakes, because the language of the lyrics is a bit archaic and full of symbolism. You can immediately notice the effect of Persian. I think Alish and you can understand some parts better than me.

I also found a video of Kazancı Bedih, singing this gazel.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x68lgo ... ders_music

Urfa or Şanlıurfa with its modern name, is a city in south-eastern Turkey and has got a tradition of music gathering with the name of "sıra geceleri", "sequence nights", because at these entertainment gatherings people sing in turns. They sing, dance and eat çiğ köfte, köfte with raw meat. It may seem as a simple party gathering, but it has rules and adab, manners and decency, are important. Gazels are an important part of this tradition.

Karadan aka dönüp ders-i dilârâ okuruz
Turning from black to white, we read (study) the lesson of dilara (dilara = heart decorating??)
Mekteb-i aşka vardık şimdi elifbâ okuruz
We have arrived at the school of love and we study the alphabet
Bülbüle sordum neydi o günler? Okurdun her dem
I asked the nightingale, “what were those days, you used to sing every time?”
Dedi: gül aşkına hoş name-i ra’na okuruz
It said, with the love of the rose we utter nice tunes
Güle sordum: Niçin bülbülü zar eylersin?
I asked the rose, “why do you make the nightingale cry?”
Dedi: Biz goncam açılsın diye esma okuruz
It said, we read “the names” so that my rosebud can blossom (here “the names” may mean the 99 names of God, I am not sure)
Tutı’ya sordum efendim nedir bu haliniz?
I asked the parrot, “Sir, what is the reason for your present situation?”
Dedi: İnci gibi sözler dizip inşa okuruz
It said, we string (arrange) words like pearls and recite “insha” ( a kind of euphuistic literary style)
Uykudan gözlerimi açamazdım evvel
In the past, I couldn’t open my eyes because of sleep
Şimdi uyku yerine şi’r-i mualla okuruz
Now, we recite shi’ri mualla (high ranked poems??) instead of sleep
Füruğ-i medrese tahsilin ikmal ettim
I have completed the education at the faculty of light???
Yeter ey dil nice bir lafz ile mana okuruz
That’s enough oh tongue! We recite the meaning (wisdom) with so many different words.

Thanks for the translation and the video nadi! I couldn't help but notice that most of the people in the video were older; this sort of music isn't popular with young people in Turkey?

I have been listening to Arash a bit lately after I heard a song with him on Aneela's album, together they have made 2 (as far as I know) quite cool Urdu-Farsi mix songs:

Aneela & Arash - Chori Chori (Sneakily)
http://www.imeem.com/people/RaBaZ-/musi ... ori_chori/

Arash & Aneela - Boro Boro (Remix)

Yes, this music is not so popular any more.

:) Boro boro is always popular in my house and this mixture is also nice.

There's a very fun music video for "Chori Chori":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VBEdVkpEsE

I'm not a big fan of Arash, but here is my favorite song by him, "Iran Iran." It's a patriotic football tune and the lyrics should be easy for learners to understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_1maePHaZk

Here's a song that's much more to my tastes: Giti Pashaei singing "Molana." This is one of my favorite Iranian songs ever, it's really mystical and her voice is gorgeous. Unfortunately the video cuts off halfway through the song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zVSFYMcj3U
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Arash's song is so lively!
Searching the other Persian music videos, I came up with Giti. I like Gole Maryam and I have learned that Giti sang this nice song. Another video with two of her songs is here. It was nice to understand the entrance of the song easly :)

اسمون ماه داره
دریا ماهییا رو
صحرا نرگس داره
من او دو تا چشمهای سیاه

And, here is another website where you can find a lot of Iranian singers from the past. The videoclips reflect the music world of Iran in old times.

Rémy, how much is the size of imeem songs usually? Are they big (2+ MB)?

Here you can listen to the full album.

I think that it depends on the size of the original MP3 that is uploaded onto the site, I'm not sure though, I'd imagine on average around 2/3MB.

How popular is émigré-Iranian music in Iran? Does much of it get played on TV or radio in Iran? Are the CDs of émigré artists available to buy in stores?

Yes, this album is very nice. Shadmehr is one of those few singers whose almost all songs are beautiful. He is also a great musician. He plays guitar and violin well. It's a pity he left the country.

Nadi, have you heard this Persian-Turkish song: bi to hargez (sensiz asla)? The Persian singer is Shahyâd and the Turkish singer is Emrah. I have also seen its show. Whether the song be beautiful or not, I like the Persian-Turkish relation. The quality of the song is not good but you should be able to find it somewhere else with a better quality.

Yes, I know that song. Emrah began to sing when he was just a child. He used to be called "Küçük Emrah", امراه کوچک , at that time. He made same fils, too.
I have listened to another Persian-Turkish song from Raika Seifi.Tasvire man o to is the title of the song. I have it on my PC but I couldn't find it on umahal. I think I couldn't spell the words correctly.

My friends are really fond of Shahram Nazeri:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JtfvduhSTQ

And I saw this Persian setar player called Masud Shaari yesterday in Madrid:
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ff8ciVTMGk

Hosein Alizadeh is come to Madrid on November 14th, but unfortunately I won't be here to see him.
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=wXNhk2fVjwk

There is a cultural group in Madrid called "Centro Persépolis" that organizes all these musical activities, also it seems they organize Iranian Cinema shows, etc. The website is: http://www.centropersepolis.net, although it seems it is only available in Spanish at this stage.
