Learning resources

Postby alijsh » 2006-11-14, 6:51

This thread is for introducing learning materials available in any form (web page, e-book, book) and language.

» Free online course: http://www.easypersian.com/index.html

----------------------------
@EDITED 11-Feb-2007 - Links about {CULTURAL & HISTORICAL & TOURISTIC; MEDIA; MUSIC; E-BOOKS; FONTS} were removed because they are not learning resources. If necessary, we'll pay to them in separate threads.
----------------------------
@EDITED 16-Apr-2007 - Let's have this thread exclusively for learning materials. We have now separate threads for dictionaries: Persian dictionaries (books)Persian dictionaries (online)Persian dictionaries (computer programs)

- Many thanks for your understanding!

Thanks so much! Don't know when I'll get time to look at them all, especially on dial-up, but again, that will be a fantastic reference!

I like the dictionary at http://www.wdgco.com/dic/ , which is pe-en, en-pe, but I might like one of yours better after I’ve tried them!

There’s a Khayam Persian Calendar Converter at http://www.payvand.com/calendar/

Nazem has a short story with interactive aids at http://persianintexas.org/nazem/index.html

Interlit foundation has some Dari resources at http://www.interlitfoundation.org/publi ... aypal.html

There are some Persian learning aids available for purchase at http://www.languages.com.au/list.asp?le ... ct=Persian , but I haven’t bought any of them.

That’s about it from me. You guys probably already know about them anyway, but I like to share!

That looks like it's saying: "everyone knows everything" or maybe "everything is known by everyone".

I would assume that means something like: there is nothing new under the sun; or: everything there is to know is already known by someone.

Is that sort of what you mean?

This is, indeed, the best course online that I have found - I'm glad it was suggested. :P

And alijsh, I wish there were a drooling emoticon, because that's the kind that I need now.

Bashiri course is not so good. Some of its examples are out of use.

Admitidly, I've had some friends tell me the same...However, how difficult is it to find decent resources in Persian? Very much so! Considering this, the Bashiri course remains highly recommended, imho. :)

A surprise for most of you: visit http://edu.tebyan.net/textbooks/index.htm to get access to scanned version of schoolbooks of Iran; from elementary school to pre-university.

Enjoy!

I think I know the Bashiri course you're talking about - I did find something a couple of months ago and somehow lost it from my favourites. But now I can't get back to the link you posted. I even tried going to their home page and searching through the site but cannot find the course.

Is it possible the link has changed or is not available anymore? Are you only getting to it from saved pages or from fresh links?

The Bashiri course is indeed unavailable now (as of last week sometime), which is unfortunate.

Magister told me about:

Modern Persian: Spoken and Written (Vols 1 & 2) ; Donald L. Stilo, Kamran Talattof, and Jerome W. Clinton

I downloaded a sample chapter and it was really good. Has anybody of you studied this course? Its homepage: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~talattof/persian/

Also take a look at http://ibexpub.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4 and tell us whether you have tried any of these materials.

Thanks for the favor

I have both volumes - they're the best printed books that I have ever been able to find on Persian. If you don't have it, then I highly recommend you buy BOTH volumes. It is a bit expensive, but definetely worth it if you are seriously studying the language. As the book's title says, I felt that it was a great introduction into spoken Persian - such written resources are extremely difficult to find...As stated before, the only hinderance would be the cost, it took me a few months before I could buy both...but then again I'm a student.

dastet dard nakone Sisyphe!

You know, many people who start learning Persian don't know a good course. So it's very useful to take benefit from the experience of upper-level learners like you.

What other books do you have and recommend? dictionary, grammarbook, phrasebook, idiom-book, etc.

The Bashiri course is just being moved to a new server. I emailed him and this is the response I got:

The Persian for Beginners materials are in the process of being moved
to a new server. The link will be updated in the web page menu as well
as on the Site Map as soon as the transfer is completed. Thank you for
your interest.

So hopefully it will be back soon.
