Zazaki

Postby Set » 2012-07-31, 8:54

I couldn't find a thread for this language, so I'm making this one to post some cool links. Firstly, you probably have to understand German to get anywhere with Zazaki since that's all I could find...and Germans love their Iranistik.

Map 1
Zazaki is an Iranian language and stems from Parthian, so is more related to Gorani than Persian or Kurdish, although looking at the vocabulary, a lot can be worked out with some knowledge of those two languages.

Map 2
There are an estimated 1.5 - 2.5 million speakers living in central Anatolia. Much like the Kurds, the Zazaki language as well as culture has been oppressed for a long time and many Zazakis now prefer to speak Turkish over Zazaki. However, their is interest in maintaining the language and apparently there are some Zazaki programmes shown by TRT 6 on Fridays.

Zazaki has often been considered a Kurdish dialect, however, looking at map 1 shows us this isn't true. Nevertheless, the Zazakis have received a kind of double oppression since many Kurds don't want to see Zazaki separatism grow.

Here is an interesting article on the linguistics of the language by my old lecturer from Hamburg.

Anyway, here are the resources:
A language course (German)
A small Zazaki vocabulary(German)

I recently bought the Little Prince in Zazaki, so at a later point I might write up a small extract to look at and possibly decipher.

Here's a short extract from the famous beginning to the Little Prince or Şazadeo Qickek (Persian: Şāhzādeh-ye Kuçulu, Kurmanji: Mirzayê Biçûk)

Ez ke şeş serri debiyan; rocê, yew kitabo be namey "Heykatê ke vêniyaê", gemê ke torzên cı nêkewtê, inan sero nusiyao, mi tede resmê do zaf rındek di bi. Resmê bi, sero marê boa heywanê dê yabani qult kerdêne. Kopya xo naya ita.

I'm going to try and work out what most of it means using the original, but don't expect it all to be correct. If anyone can see a better translation for certain words/phrases, make a post.

Ez ke şeş serri debiyan - I that/when six years was/became
rocê - one day (I guess this is oblique case)
yew kitabo be namey... - a book with the name
Heykatê ke vêniyaê - True stories from nature (heykat, like hekāyat - story)
cı (nê)kewtene - to (not) enter
gemê ke torzên cı nêkewtê - maybe it means something like 'when I saw...', but I'm kinda lost with this one
sero - on it
resmê do zof rindek- a very nice picture (not sure what 'do' means)
resmê bi, sero... - it was a picture, in which...
marê boa - boa snake
heywanê - animal
dê / yabani - dunno :?
qult kerdêne - was swallowing (not sure which tense exactly, but it must be the past)

Ok, dunno how helpful that was, but maybe someone will find it interesting. If anyone wants some free online texts (short stories) in Zazaki, I can send you a link to a bunch of them.

Oh wow I didn't know we had a thread about Zazaki! Cool thread! And I didn't know Set wrote something about Zazaki, too. I wonder how his research about Kurdish is going.

What would you say if we move this thread under the Kurdish forum? I know technically Zaza is a separate language, but then we have Sorani under Kurdish, and the Arabic forum also hosts Arabic dialects of all colours (which are technically separate languages too)...

I'm not sure if Set is ever going to return to this forum. :( I can now follow this Zaza text with the help of glosbe dictionary (Zaza <-> Turkish -- it seems to give the best results).

gemê ke torzên cı nêkewtê - maybe it means something like 'when I saw...', but I'm kinda lost with this one

gem - forest
torzin - an axe

a forest where an axe didn't enter (a primeval forest)

Does anybody know where I might be able to find some resources on Zazaki? Like grammars & dictionaries? I'd really appreciate as I've recently discovered this language & I love it! Thanks in advance

For people interested in learning Zazaki (through Turkish), here are two web-pages with a rather complete set of lessons and a very systematic approach:

http://dilope.com/zazaca-dersler-1/

http://dilope.com/zazaca-dersler-2/

The site dilope.com also has some other useful pages, such as this set of simple dialogues:

http://dilope.com/zazaca-diyaloglar/

A pretty comprehensive Zazaki-Turkish dictionary can be viewed/downloaded here:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http ... ype%3D.pdf

and another one:

Some folktales in Zazaki, German, and English:

A Morphological Sketch of Southern Zazaki, by Brigitte Werner:

And here's a full-length book on the Zazas:

Rivers and Mountains, by Eberhard Werner:

And for your listening pleasure, an online radio station broadcasting round-the-clock (?) Zazaki music:
