Learning hindi, especially grammar

Postby Nik » 2014-12-31, 9:19

Hi all,

I intend to take a basic Hindi class next year (2015! LOL), but would like to self-learn some stuff before I join a class since I'm a slow learner.

1) Any good and idiot-proof online resources to learn hindi grammar, in particular how to construct a sentence? Like what word is in front of what. Many of the links in this forum stickies seems broken since they're so long ago.

2) What is "hai" and why is it that many hindi sentences seem to have this word at the end? Like "kya hai", "Mera naam John hai" etc.

3) "Your dancing is good" = Tera nachle bahut good? LOL :)

Tks!
Nik

Hey Nik, it's not the most exciting resource but this has a good basic overview of Hindi grammar:
http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/mideast/hindi/grammar.html

Hai is the present tense marker and the singular verb to be. It can be translated as "is". Hindi is SOV langauge which means the verb almost always comes at the end of the sentence. For example:
mera naam John hai-My name is John but you are saying My name john is.
अहिंसा/เจ

Tks Meera! Btw, is there an equivalent for the word "actually"?
I remember hearing something which sounds like "air-sair care-sair" or something LOL

Tks!

Namaste Nik! There are probably many different ways to say actually but I would use:
वास्तव में (vastav mein). You can use "asal mein" too I believe.
अहिंसा/เจ

Thanks Meera! Btw, below is a line from the famous hindi song Tum Hi Ho:

Tera mera rishta hai kaisa

How do you pronounce the word "kaisa"?

I seem to hear people say it as "care-sair" and "kai-sar". Which is correct?

Hello Nik! The word kaisa changes on who you are talking too. For example in plural it would be "kaise" and if you are talking to a woman it would be "kaisi". I'm not sure how to describe how to pronounce it but you can hear it here:

The way to pronounce it will depend on the persons mother tongue and dialect.
