Strictly Urdu Corner

Postby Meera » 2010-11-05, 23:31

I didn't see a topic for this before but I think it would be good if we had a thread with Only Urdu realted things.

First of all I wanted to ask anyone if there are any sites to learn Urdu writting? The kind that used in Pakistan and not Arabic style writting. I can read Arabic but Urdu writting is very hard, is there anywhere to learn this? And also what is thebest book for Urdu? I have Teach Yourself, but I would like some more resources :)

Teach Yourself just published this last month:

Meera, try magpk.com or urdustan.net.. both provide you a chance to learn Urdu writing. but i m curious to know what made you so much interested in learning urdu writing? by the way, it's not that difficult to learn :)

Wish you best of luck :)

I haven't learned Urdu script yet, but have you heard of "Darvazah"? Although, most of the time the lessons never work for me(Ugh.), it seems to teach script pretty well. I have some sort of weird issue with learning online though, so I can't say I've had much experience with it. *haha*

Do you mean the Nastaliq style? I got taught to read that way, but the internet is filled with Urdu in Naskh. It's really irritating, actually >:( . I don't even know how to input Nastaliq into an online form or a word processor.

Yes it is very frustrating. Because that's what newspapers and books are written in. Even signs are written in that way but you cant find anywhere on internet

It's also a much prettier style. Naskh is ugly as hell.

I understand your frustration Meera. Learning to read the nastaliq style of calligraphy can be difficult, but there are ways to practice. The reason you don't see nastaliq on the internet is because most fonts (including Times New Roman) use the naskh style.
My advice would be to download a nastaliq font and try typing random words and phrases in Urdu in that font. Then read them back to yourself. Eventually you will become pretty comfortable with the nastaliq style.
There is a pretty good nastaliq font available from the Center for Research in Urdu Language Processing in Pakistan. It's a free download, check it out...

Best of luck :)

Hello everyone, I just bought a book called, Let's Study Urdu: An Introductory Course. " I just paged through it today and although the urdu font is really tiny, I must say it looks like a great course and if your interested in Urdu deffintly pick it up!
http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Study-Urdu-I ... 216&sr=8-1

It even takes songs and translate them. And gives you the vocabualry for it. Most songs are from old bollywood, for example, "awara hoon" Really nice book, check it out.
