Read this brief section on vowels.

Just like in Arabic and Persian, short vowels (the diacritical marks known as tashkeel) are almost never written in Urdu. Sometimes they are included with alif if it's the first letter of a word, such as in « اُردو »

Kasra is also occasionally written to indicate use of the Izāfa construct borrowed from Persian, such as in « دلِ من »

You got that right! I should have known this with my knowledge of Persian because I know all those letters, but I'm far from being confident in it and I don't know how the Urdu script differs from the Perso-Arabic script that I'm learning. That's why I decided to start with Hindi (yesterday) although I feel more attracted to Urdu.

You're most welcome, Shadad :D

The Urdu alphabet is identical to the Persian alphabet except for the addition of a few letters that represent sounds not found in Persian. Of course, pronunciation is much more varied. It should be very easy to learn when you decide to explore Urdu further.

In hindi/urdu how do you say, "Im sorry for bothering you.." like to get someones attetion or after talking to them. Like say I asked what time it was and they responded and I would say, Thanks, sorry for the bother. Or something along those lines

To catch someone's attention, I would politely say something like the following:

zarā suniye
Just listen.

mujhe āp se kuch puchhnā hai
I have something to ask you.

Why is that all Hindi courses are so different than the Hindi used in Bollywood movies. :doggy:
I just learned that ''Shukriya'' is Urdu and not Hindi. :? It's perplexing. :hmm:

What Hindi course are you using? I suggest Teach Yourself hindi or Elementry Hindi, this will have you understand bollywood. I used them and understand fine. the courses your using must be shud hindi.

Thanks. I was just wondering because so many Pakistani resturants are named this and also I see jewerly stores with this name too.

I think I will start learning Hindi again, because Croatian TV will show an Indian soap opera, all 250 episodes in prime time (18 30 - 19 15) just before the main news program ;)

I don't understand:
Anjaana Anjaani is translated as Stranger, Stranger
but what is the difference, is it a different gender, which one is masculine, and which one is feminine? :hmm:

By the way, these words are so cute (although Aashiyana is cuter :whistle: ).
