om+te

Postby Etxebunti » 2012-03-20, 22:50

Dankie!

PS : ek hoop my Afrikaans is korrek.

OM + TE is like the German UM + ZU, and conveys the sense of "doing abc in order to do xyz".

Ek gaan by die skool OM Afrikaans TE leer.
I go to the school IN ORDER TO learn afrikaans.

My broer is op vakansie by die kus OM sy branders plank TE ry.
My brother is on vacation on the coast IN ORDER TO go surfing (lit. ride his surf board).

As 'n mens van plan is OM vis TE vang moet hy eers visgereedskap koop.
If one intends to go fishing one must first buy fishing tackle. (Does not translate readily as IN ORDER TO in English, but perhaps: if one makes a plan IN ORDER TO catch fish...)

Hope this is of some use.
Rich

PS, I've just thought how a reworking of your second sentence might also illustrate om te.
