I don't speak Afrikaans either, so I dunno if it was correct Afrikaans, but it would've been correct Dutch. As in the way of saying it ;)

"But to write Afrikaans"

Don't forget the double negative when writing Afrikaans. "ek dit nie verstaan nie"

That's wrong

"ek dit nie verstaan nie" is wrong, you don't use a double negative in this sentence.

"ek verstaan dit nie" is perfectly correct. You would use a double negative if there were another verb in the sentence, e.g.:

"ek kann dit nie verstaan nie"
^^lol^^

Sorry, I missed this part, and only looked at the spelling below.

The Afrikaans I've heard, though it was a Namibian variant, does use it in that form. As far as I know, double negative is a rule in Afrikaans unless a negating element (but, except, etc.) is already there, in which case there is only a single negation would be correct. "ek verstaan dit nie" however does sound right to me, but according to the above rule would be incorrect. Perhaps even the 'rule' is regionally bound?

I believe they were Namibian Germans, which I guess would in most cases make them secondary speakers. (?) Not sure though, as I think some of the NG's stopped using German and adopted Afrikaans/English instead ...

I re-wrote this, and I was wondering if there were any mistakes or general comments:

Afrikaans Lesson 1

(I'm currently working on lesson 2, so it's pretty unorganized)

No, the rule is not regionally bound, but there are always exceptions to the rule. In the sentence you quote: "Ek dit nie verstaan nie", the word order is wrong. It should be: " Ek verstaan nie dit nie."
"Ek verstaan dit nie", is correct, depending on the context.

Only when you're speaking to God. When you're addressing ordinary earthlings, it's the small "u".

Your knowledge of Afrikaans is excellent, Siegel, I'm impressed! You're leaving very little for me to comment on. :D

Ek het na die Afrikaanse les gekyk en miskien kan die volgende jou help: "Ek is goed" is nie die vertaling vir "I'm fine" nie. :nope: "Dit gaan goed (met my)" word gebruik. :yep:

Op 'n vraag soos : "Hoe gaan dit met u?" kan 'n mens ook antwoord "Goed dankie"

Vriende spreek mekaar nie aan as "u" nie, en as jou bedoeling was om 'n voorbeeld van 'n algemene gesprek onder vriende te hê, sou ek dit nie gebruik nie. :D

Totsiens is 'n algemene Afrikaanse woord.

Dis nou baie lank na 2008, maar wil iemand nog weet oor die verledetyd = het + ge-, en oor die dubbele negatief in Afrikaans. Laat weet asseblief ...
