I asked a native speaker for you. She said Afrikaans is like a mix of Dutch and French. The impression she gave was that it was like Portuguese being a mix of Spanish and French.

I've heard there's no strong verbs in Afrikaans and the grammar is more simplified than in Dutch.

Dutch has two or three genders. Afrikaans has no grammatical gender.

Afrikaans started out as a dialect of Dutch.

Grammatically Afrikaans has no strong verbs, for example

Dutch: breken, gebroken
Afrikaans: breek, gebreek

no conjugation, there's double negation, pronouns differ as well as orthography.

ek vs. ik
jy vs. je/jij
hy vs. he/hij
sy vs. ze/zij
julle vs. jullie
hulle vs. ze/zij
U is the same

Written official Afrikaans would be understood by Dutch speakers, very colloquial slangy language not really, spoken lang is harder too.
^^lol^^

Hoi, kersvers lid hier. 8)

I'll continue in English since the topicstarter wrote in English.

I am Flemish, so my native language is Dutch ( or one of the many Dutch dialects)
I think Afrikaans is a separate language, but mutually intelligible to some degree.
I don't think it's a mixture of French and Dutch, more like a simplified form of Dutch ( no conjugations, no genders)

One Flemish reporter visited South Africa and she said "It's the other side of the world but the pin-machines help you in almost the same language"

Many Afrikaners went to Dutchspeaking territories (the Netherlands and Flanders) in the last century. I actually know one person like that, and the funny thing is that she never really completely switches to Dutch (she still says "ons" instead of "we" and stuff like that :D )

Agreed. Afrikaans does have some French words, and French did have an influence on the development of Afrikaans, but Afrikaans is most certainly not a mixture of Dutch and French. The Afrikaners are mainly of Dutch and German descent, with French in third place. (I'm more of French descent, but with quite a dash of German thrown in.)

As for Dutch and Afrikaans getting closer, I agree that the position of Afrikaans can be strenghtened by closer ties with Dutch. In recent years the interest in Dutch here has grown slightly. But it should be remembered that they are two seperate languages, existing in totally different cultural environments. Afikaans speakers think of Dutch as interesting, a language which is close to Afrikaans, sort of in the way that you'd think of a relative you don't really know, and haven't seen since childhood. On the rare occasion that we get Dutch TV programmes here, they are dubbed into Afrikaans, and Dutch books are translated into Afrikaans. But there are a few Dutch singers who are popular here, such as Stef Bos. The fact that these singers also do Afrikaans songs, probably has a lot to do with it.

You're right, it seems impossible for an Afrikaans speaker to become totally fluent in Dutch, and vice versa. My godparents were Dutch, they emigrated from the Netherlands just after WW2. But while both of them spoke Afrikaans, there would always be some Dutch words inbetween (such as "krant" for newspaper, "koerant" in Afrikaans).
