A song translation

Postby Loiks » 2007-06-03, 14:55

Can I ask the words and translation of Bok van Blerk's 'De La Rey sal jy die boere kom lei'? In English, but it would be nice to have Dutch translation too, to compare :).

Op 'n berg in die nag
On a mountain at night
Lê ons in die donker en wag
We lie in the darkness and wait
I lay coldly in the mud and blood
Streepsak en reën kleef teen my
Floursack and rain cling to me

En my huis en my plaas
And my house an my farm
Burned to coals so that they can catch us.
But those flames and fire burn now deep
Diep binne my.
Deep inside me/

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey, will you come lead the boers?
De La Rey,
Generaal, generaal soos een man, sal ons om jou val.
General, general, as one man shall we fall about you.
Generaal De La Rey.
General De La Rey.

Hoor die Kakies wat lag,
Listen to the Kakhies (Brits) who laugh,
'n handjie van ons teen 'n hele groot mag
A handful of us, against a really great force
And the cliffs lie here against our back,
Hulle dink dis verby.
They think it's over.
But the heart of a boer lies deeper and wider,
Hulle gaan dit nog sien.
They're yet to see that.
Op 'n perd kom hy aan,
On a horse he comes,
Die Leeu van die Wes Transvaal.
The lion of West Transvaal.

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey, will you come lead the boers?
De La Rey, De La Rey
Generaal, generaal soos een man, sal ons om jou val.
General, general, as one man shall we fall about you.
Generaal De La Rey.
General De La Rey

Want my vrou en my kind lê in 'n kamp en vergaan,
Because my wife and my child are lying in a camp and whithering away,
And the kakhies' marrow runs over a nation that shall arise once again.

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey, will you come lead the boers?
De La Rey, De La Rey
Generaal, generaal, sal jy die Boere kom haal?
General, general, will you come get the boers?

Let me add Dutch...

Op 'n berg in die nag
Op een berg in de nacht
On a mountain at night
Lê ons in die donker en wag
Liggen wij in het donker en wachten
We lie in the darkness and wait
I lay coldly in the mud and blood
Streepsak en reën kleef teen my
?-zak en regen kleven tegen mij
Floursack and rain cling to me

En my huis en my plaas
En mijn huis en mijn boerderij
And my house an my farm
Burned to coals so that they can catch us.
But those flames and fire burn now deep
Diep binne my.
Diep binnenin mij.
Deep inside me.

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey, zal jij de Boeren komen leiden?
De La Rey, De La Rey, will you come lead the boers?
De La Rey,
Generaal, generaal soos een man, sal ons om jou val.
Generaal, generaal, zoals een man zullen wij (rond)om jou vallen.
General, general, as one man shall we fall about you.
Generaal De La Rey.
Generaal De La Rey.
General De La Rey.

Hoor die Kakies wat lag,
Hoor de Kakies die lachen,
Listen to the Kakhies (Brits) who laugh,
'n handjie van ons teen 'n hele groot mag
Een handjevol van ons tegen een hele grote macht
A handful of us, against a really great force
And the cliffs lie here against our back,
Hulle dink dis verby.
Zij denken dat dit voorbij is.
They think it's over.
But the heart of a boer lies deeper and wider,
Hulle gaan dit nog sien.
Zij gaan dit nog zien.
They're yet to see that.

Ah yes, my little friend with the limited knowledge, who always eagerly translates Afrikaans texts into Dutch when they look similar, but thinks up all kinds of excuses when it's not so easy. I still laugh about the many mistakes you made when you tried to translate that little piece of mine...   But don't worry, I won't hold it against you, I know you've learned the little you think you know from a man totally discredited in South Africa and Afrikaans and Dutch language circles...

It's a horrible song. The only reason why it's become popular, is because the words are so simple that it's easy to learn and to sing along. And now some people have given a political colour to it. :x

Anybody op, er, up for another Bok van Blerk song? This one's about Afrikaans itself:

Jy praat nog steeds my taal

You still speak my language

(I think this is deliberately ambiguous. "Language can be the object of "speak" or Bok is addressing the language: "You still speak, my language".)

Die vlamme brand so kaal

The flames burn so bald.

(Not sure I get this. "Kaal" is bald or naked. Is there an idiom here I don't get?)

Because around a campfire I will repeat the old things.

Sê my voel jou nou

Say to me you feel now (???)

(Trouble parsing this line. "Voel" can be a noun or verb, "my" can be possessive or objective. "You now say my feeling"? )

Soos ons taal nou bou

As our language now builds

(Is this right?)

That I proudly can go where Afrikaners stand

Want jy praat nog steeds my taal
Want jy praat nog steeds my taal
Ja jy praat nog steeds my taal

Because you still speak my language
Because you still speak my language
Yes you still speak my language

Sonder jou voel ek verdwaal

Without you I feel lost

En 'n koue vuur

And a cold fire

Sê kole brand nooit uit nie

Say coals never burn out

In the dark we feel someone touch us

Want my hart lê hier

Because my heart lies here

Hier waar my mense staan

Here where my people stand

Saam met elke hart en siel

Together with each heart and soul

Sal ek op staan

I shall stand up

I think I'm missing some idiomatic implications. Anybody?

No, if he was addressing the language, there would've been a comma after "steeds"

Die vlamme brand so kaal

The flames burn so bald.

(Not sure I get this. "Kaal" is bald or naked. Is there an idiom here I don't get?)

It litterally means that the flames are burning everything, there's nothing left. In this sense "kaal" rather means "bare" than "naked". Eg. Die veld is kaal - the field is bare (there are no plants or trees.

Sê my hoe voel jy nou. Tell me how you feel now. "Voel" is not a noun. The noun is "gevoel" (feeling).

Soos ons taal nou bou

As our language now builds

(Is this right?)

Yes. It refers to the political situation in the country. During the apartheid years Afrikaans was seen by blacks as the language of the oppressors. Now that apartheid is gone, more blacks are willing to speak Afrikaans.

That I proudly can go where Afrikaners stand

Want jy praat nog steeds my taal
Want jy praat nog steeds my taal
Ja jy praat nog steeds my taal

Because you still speak my language
Because you still speak my language
Yes you still speak my language

Sonder jou voel ek verdwaal

Without you I feel lost

En 'n koue vuur

And a cold fire

Sê kole brand nooit uit nie

Say coals never burn out

The quotation is wrong. It's not sê (say), it's "se" which indicates possession - - En 'n koue vuur se kole brand nooit uit nie - And a cold fire's coals newer burn out.

In the dark we feel someone touch us

In the dark we feel everyone touching us

Want my hart lê hier

Because my heart lies here

Hier waar my mense staan

Here where my people stand

Saam met elke hart en siel

Together with each heart and soul

Sal ek op staan

I shall stand up

The line "saam met elke hart en siel" is a variation of the expression "met hart en siel" (Ek glo in iets met hart en siel - I believe in something with heart and soul). It means you're totally dedicated, and strongly believes in something. The expression is never used the way it is used here in the song.

Hope this helps! :)

The lyrics are actually pretty weak, and doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well, I got the lyrics from the liner notes, which appear to be hastily done and a bit sloppy about punctuation. (More about this later).

I was going by the way he sings it. There's a bit of a pause after "steeds," just enough to be ambiguous.

Die vlamme brand so kaal

The flames burn so bald.

Thanks. That one had me confused.

Thanks, that's the only way that makes sense, I think. The liner notes had it the way I wrote it, but as I noted above, I think now that the notes were done sloppily.

In the dark we feel someone touch us

In the dark we feel everyone touching us

Want my hart lê hier

Ja, dankie, Andre!

The lyrics are actually pretty weak, and doesn't make a lot of sense.

Originally this was the title track of the CD. The CD was renamed "De La Rey" when that song proved to be infinitely more popular.

Does anyone have afrikaans words for Bok van Blerks song '68 Chevy'? The video is in You Tube and it seems to tell something important. :D I just couldn't understand what!
