This is a thread for videos, text lyrics, biographies and whatever else connected with Slovenian music and musicians. All genres and eras are welcome.

You can post any music you like (or even if you don't like it if it seems otherwise interesting, e.g. has interesting lyrics ;)).

I'll start with my favourite from the 80's when I was a kid (there seems to be a lot of 80's revival going on around me and I heard the song on the radio just recently). I mostly liked the song because of its lyrics, especially the chorus, that's why I'm including it in the post:

Band: Bazar
Song: Tina
Genre: pop
Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhibwU-Q70A

Text lyrics with my own quick translation (pretty word-to-word):

Tina, kratka zgodba dvajsetih let.
(Tina, a short story of twenty years.)
Mladostne sanje in strgani listi velikih besed.
(Youthful dreams and torn paper sheets with big words.)
Na rosnem* licu porazi in večne prevare.
(On the very young cheek defeats and eternal deceptions.)
Gradovi v oblakih, peščene utvare.
(Castles in the clouds, sandy illusions:)

Tina, dolge sence starih dreves, misliš, da sama si?
(Tina, long shadows of old trees, you think you're alone?)
Veter tam za gradom ti grabi lase in slišiš pesmi pozabe
(The wind behind the castle grabs your hair and you hear songs of oblivion)
z gostilne pri Lini, ki grejejo prste, otroški spomini.
(from Lina's Inn, which warm fingers, childhood memories.)

REFREN:
(CHORUS:)
Tina ne verjame,
(Tina doesn't believe)
da je danes drugače.
(that it is different today.)
Tina ne zaupa,
(Tina doesn't trust)
niti lastnim očem.
(even her own eyes.)

*rosen - in its basic meaning it means dewy, but it can also mean very young, which is probably meant here (a very young girl, yet she already knows about defeat and deception).

Bazar was a popular pop band in Slovenia in the 80's, some of their other hits include: Si še jezna name (Are you still angry with me), Portorož 1905, Poišči me (Find me - also my favourite), Dober dan (Good day), Amerika, Zate (For you). Slovenian Wikipedia says that the band was active from 1984 to 1992 and released two albums: Bazar in 1988 and Amerika in 1990.

Today I'll post a more recent hit song - released in 2004. I heard it on the radio just recently and I thought it was a good choice for the next post.

Band: Dan D
Song: Voda
Genre: I'm not really sure, I think they play different genres, it's difficult to decide (rock, pop, something in between?, maybe a bit indie like the info in the link below implies?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSYzyI9JApg

I won't be posting any lyrics this time, but the chorus of the song says to let yourself be carried by water.

The group has been active since 1996, changed three members in between (according to Slovenian wikipedia) and also had many hit songs on Slovenian radio stations: Ko hodiš nad oblaki (When you walk above clouds), Plešeš (You dance), Čas (Time), Voda (Water), ...

The song in the link above was recorded in a different version as well - as a combination of "Voda" by Dan D and "Male roke" by Siddharta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQQh19Fl ... re=related

(Edit: The two bands sing the other band's part and not their own.)

My favorite is Turbo Angels :D
I like almost all their songs, They play some sort of mixture of polka and techno. I'd say that's turbo polka!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2D1yTws6fk
And two female singers are SOOOO hot!

These are the lyrics of Ej kaj bi ti

Ej kaj bi ti dala meni lubčke tri
kakšne lubčke tri dost' si upaš se mi zdi
ej kaj bi ti dala saj to ne boli
ah saj ti bom dala ker simpatičen si mi
in bova oba vesela hojlarijari

V NAŠI GOSTILNI GA ČAGAMO VSI
SO KELNARCE PRAVE VSE SE DOBI
V NAŠI GOSTILNI JE VAŽNO LE TO
DA ŽELJO VSAKO SI IZPOLNIMO

Ej kaj bi ti dala meni se mudi
kaj če se mudi so pred tabo drugi vsi
ej kaj bi ti dala mimo vrste mi
ah saj ti bom dala ker simpatičen si mi
in bova oba vesela hojlarijari

V NAŠI GOSTILNI GA ČAGAMO VSI
SO KELNARCE PRAVE VSE SE DOBI
V NAŠI GOSTILNI JE VAŽNO LE TO
DA ŽELJO VSAKO SI IZPOLNIMO

I don't quite understand it.
Can someone translate that to English or Serbian?

I was wondering whether I should post something like that in the future too, since it's not exactly the kind of music I listen to, I've never even heard this song before. And since it's meant to be an open thread I guess it was better I left it to someone who enjoys the music. :) Maybe the thread is going to "pick up" after all.

You said you don't quite understand it, why don't you tell me which are the words you don't understand and I'll translate those? Basically it's something about a pub where your every wish can be fulfilled, where the serving girls are nice and where everyone parties - that's the chorus.

Good to be reminded of this thread. I was thinking about what to post next and today I saw a post about a Slovenian melodic death metal band "To hate" on a blog site I sometimes go to and thought it would be nice to post something different:

The band was just given grade 7 out of 10 at the German metal site metal.de:
http://metal.de/cdreviews.php4?was=review&id=12719

And they also have a myspace site where you can listen to four of their songs:
http://www.myspace.com/tohateband

I'll try to post more different genres in the future.

The text has quite a lot of colloquial and even dialectal words, which can't be found in on-line dictionaries and translators, and it seems you had most problems with those and the ones which are conjugated or declinated. Most Slovenian on-line translators still have problems with those words.

lubčke - kisses, plural, accusative (colloquial word)

kakšne lubčke - literally "what kind of kisses", but more like "What do you mean kisses?"

dost' si upaš se mi zdi - you have some nerve (=audacity) I think
(dost' - colloquial, short for dosti)

saj - because

bova - we will be, dual form, infitive of the verb is "biti"

čagamo - we are partying, ("čagati" is a dialectal word, one of my ex-roommates was from that region and he used to say that "čaga" is not just a party, but something I can't even imagine. He was just joking, I think.)

dobi - get, infinitive of the verb is "dobiti", (vse se) dobi - you can get anything

(meni) se mudi - I'm in a hurry, infinitive of the verb is "muditi se", (it's a reflexive verb)

Hope that helps.

Time for a new post. Today's duo is called "Da Phenomena" and has released two albums so far:
"Skupaj sva" in 2005 and "dP" in 2008.
It's again difficult to define the genre, one of the comments on the web describes the music as funk. On their website the members of the duo say that they play the kind of music that they would like to listen to.

There are quite a lot of their songs available on youtube. Here's their first single "Nočem te nazaj" (I don't want you back):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48B9CTk4 ... re=related

A song with a very repetitive video  "Pejdap" (I'm not really sure what that means):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48B9CTk4 ... re=related

A song from the new album "Jočem" (I'm crying):

You can listen to the songs (or their samples) on the band's homepage as well:

Yay, over one hundred views! :partyhat:

I just saw an article about Slovenian singer Alya on a Slovenian internet site. The article says she had a successful concert in Poland and I thought it would be appropriate to post something about her now. Here's the link to the article for all of you who can speak Slovenian:
http://www.siol.net/trendi/glasba/novic ... jskem.aspx

Alya's music can be described as pop rock, IMO.

I first heard about her when she competed in the Slovenian selection for Eurosong, which is called Ema. She tried her luck there several times. She hasn't won the competition so far, but one of her Ema entries "Fluid" became the most played rock song on Slovenian radio stations in 2004:

Fluid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90dw1SmIW7A (karaoke version, you can sing along ;))

More of her songs:
A veš (Do you know)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILEYem3m ... re=related (from 2007)

Zvezda večera (Star of the evening)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOc3Z148 ... re=related (from 2005)

Občutek (Feeling)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szp94ENJ ... re=related (from 2005)

Absolutely moj (Absolutely mine)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J18SrnKA ... re=related (from 2008)

When Alya first became known to the public in Slovenia she wore very bright and colourful clothes and dyed her hair in bright and unusual colours, but I think she has toned down a little by now.

Today is statehood day and a national holiday in Slovenia. It's been 18 years since the declaration of independence (which means that Slovenia is not a minor country any more :) ).

As I happen to have some time on my hands I searched google for Slovenian music and found no truly comprehensive lists so far. However, on one of these lists I also spotted one of my favourite bands from the time I was a student (as far as I know they still perform):

Elvis Jackson play ska punk.

They've released four albums so far: Move your feet it´s one o'clock (1999, re-released in 2001), Go home and practice (2000), Summer Edition (2004) and Against The Gravity (2009).

Some of their songs:

Weakies (one of their best known I think)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqWWGtAv ... re=related

You and I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-0oMajQ ... re=related

Not here to pray
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTK3X_PDw74

Salvation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inQoekPA ... re=related

What I liked about their concerts was that the singer was always running and jumping round the stage. He usually wore bermudas, often checkered. :D Don't know if it still like that though, I haven't seen them in concert for quite some time.

(I'm thinking I should post some pop next time.)

Oh my, didn't realize it's been so long since I last posted here.

Today I'm presenting a band called Electrix. I'd say their genre is "80's style pop".

The band was formed about 1,5 years ago. The three band members played in other bands before, in different music genres from jazz to rock. They all stopped playing in their previous bands at roughly the same time, so they decided to form a new band together. They were listening to 80's music at the time and were kind of tired of guitars and the music they have played so far, so they decided for the "computerized" 80's sound. (When you listen to their songs, you'll understand why they call themselves Electrix. :) ).

Some of their songs are in English and some in Slovenian.

I guess it wouldn't be fair to overlook the most successful (probably) Slovenian singer Jan Plestenjak, who has been performing on Slovenian stages for more than a decade. If I remember correctly his career started in the early 90's.

According to Slovenian wikipedia he has released 9 albums so far and most of them were successful with at least a couple of songs playing on the radio all the time:
Gremo v kino (1994)
Pogrešal te bom (1995)
Morje (1997)
Amore mio (1999)
Jan (2002)
Solo (2003)
Do raja (2005)
Soba 102 (2007)
Klasika (2009)

There's so many of his songs to choose from, so I'll just post the ones I remember best.
Soba 102 (Room 102):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MWlBNpiNuM

Iz pekla do raja (From hell to heaven, together with singer Eva):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmGHAdKJam8

Tvoj song (Your song):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msjpz55VcxY

Amore mio:

Latino:

Pozabljena (Forgotten):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYJHE2ia ... re=related

Barka iz perja (Ship of feathers):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhbs8-yq ... re=related

... and so on and so on.

He also wrote the song "A veš" for singer Alya whom I mentioned in one of my previous posts.

I remember when I was finishing my studies one of my colleagues told me that her female friends and acquaintances went to his concerts and threw things onto the stage, including knickers and such, and those were women in their mid-twenties, not teenagers. Their boyfriends, who drove them to the concert, had to wait outside. I found it a bit hard to believe, but I never went to his concerts, so...

He also owns two bars, one in the capital and one at the seaside.

Today I'm presenting a choir, which describes itself as the only Slovenian jazz choir. Their name is Perpetuum Jazzile. (Slovenian wikipedia defines them as a pop jazz choir.)

Their most recent success is their version of Toto's song Africa. They even received a letter from David Paich (co-author of the original version) in which he tells them that he likes their version. The choir imitates the sounds of a storm at the beginning and at the end:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjbpwlqp5Qw

They have released the following albums:
Ko boš prišla na Bled (1999)
Pozabi, da se ti mudi (2003)
As ... (2004)
Čudna noč (2006)

Their homepage:

Their myspace site:

Bee Gees Medley:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktteZaXp ... re=related

Čudna noč (Strange night, remake of a Slovenian song):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktteZaXp ... re=related

CORRECTION: Brez besed (Without words) is not a remake of Eres tu, it's actually older than Eres tu. There were some claims that the authors of Eres tu were copying from Brez besed, but I don't think it was ever proven (it was probably what confused me and made me think that Brez besed is a remake.)

Time to write something about two Slovenian bands which I saw live this year.

The first band was Katalena.

They play a kind of ethno music (mostly modernized version of folk songs) with elements of art rock, jazz, funk and blues (I checked on their homepage).

They are quite well-known here, have had hit songs on the radio, performed at the national cultural and congress centre Cankarjev dom (http://www.cd-cc.si) and had concerts abroad as well (this May they played in New York).

They have released four albums so far:
(Z)godbe (2002)
Babje leto (2004)
Kmečka ohcet (2006)
Cvik cvak! (2008)

Their homepage (also in English):
http://www.katalena.net/slo/

Their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/katalenaslo

Youtube videos:
Lucija:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myktnPir ... re=related

(Rad imel bi) jabuko ((I would like to have) an apple):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saSFTcGu ... re=related

Da gora ta Skarbinina (in the dialect of Rezija in Italy, don't ask me what it means, because I don't understand :D):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOI3VnYRa2I

Their singer moves across the stage very smoothly, like a cat almost :D, she's lovely and lively at the same time and has a unique voice.

They played one extra song at the end, and at first it looked like only the singer and one other musician are going to perform the extra song until they slowly all came back to the stage. It was very sweet.

Unfortunately, I was sitting next to someone who felt he needed to say very loudly what he doesn't like or likes, whistled and clapped in all the wrong places (well, sometimes he also managed to do it in the right spots) and he kind of ruined it for me. I did enjoy the concert anyway, but it would have been better without him sitting so near to me.

The other band is called Orlek. They play a mixture of rock’n’roll, a kind of “folk punk polka rock" (cited from their homepage). They have been playing for twenty years and released nine albums so far (according to their website):
AJMOHT (1994)
ADIJO KNAPI (1995)
BUNKOVC PARTY - JA (1996)
SALAMURCA (1998)
1. RUKER (1999)
TETovirani3 (2001)
ORLEK EXPRESS (2004)
2 RUKER (1998-2006) The best of 2
ANDUHT (2009)
(I didn't translate, because I don't understand everything, there are some dialectal and colloquial words that I don't know.)

Their homepage (a bit strange to navigate, but ok once you get used to it)
http://www.orlek.com/

Their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/66854287

Youtube videos:
Perkmandeljc (probably their best known, the title is the name of a legendary mine dwarf, the name comes from the German word Bergteufel):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrxi3zsEe5w

Ko so lipe cvetele (When the lime trees were blooming):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNEPWIna ... re=related

Na Kum (To mount Kum - 1220m high):

Vinska trta (Grapevine - the plant which produces grapes for wine):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVBok8bC ... re=related

They were invited to a festival in Pakistan about five years ago. A documentary was made about it "Orlek rock gre v Pakistan" which I watched on tv a couple of years ago. Apparently, Perkmandeljc was a big hit. :D

While I was writing about Katalena, a lot of videos of another group that reinterprets folk music came up, so I decided to post something about them.

Terra folk is a well known band in Slovenia. It formed in 1999 and started out with reinterpretations of traditional music - mainly Slovenian, but not exclusively. However, they have started adding songs composed by themselves on the recent albums and now play their own songs mostly.

They have released the following albums:
Stereo folk - live (2001)
Pulover ljubezni - jumper of love (2002)
N'taka (2004)
Live at Queen’s Hall (2006)
Full Circle (2008)

I was at their concert in my home town almost four years ago. It was in the week before the New Year's Eve. I don't know what was up that year, because usually there's very little going on, but that year there was a tent in one of the town squares almost all week, something was going on almost every night and Terra folk's concert was one of these events .

The crowd really loved the music - and it's really hard if not impossible to get people of my town excited about music - they kept asking for more at the end and the band kept playing, it seems they liked it too. The singer Kate Hoskins was with them at the time and apparently she did think that the concert was becoming too long, because she started knitting at the end.

What can I say, it was one of the best concerts I've been to.

Today I'm going to post about a rock band called Lunn-a-park (previously Lunapark, they changed their name because there are many other bands called Lunapark). The band was formed in 2001 and has released two albums: Labirint (2005) and Area (2007).

Their homepage:

Their myspace:

Youtube videos:
Fake (my favourite, it was played on the radio quite a lot):

I especially like the chorus:
Ni vse le zlato, kar se od daleč blešči, (Not everything is gold that glitters from afar,)
ni vse dobro blago, kar je prijetno za oči, (not everything is good that is pleasant to the eye,)
ni vse tako, kot je videti na prvi pogled. (not everything is as it seems at first sight.)

("Dobro blago" could be translated as "quality goods", but I didn't think it would sound ok in the English translation, so I left only "good" instead.)

While searching for videos and information on the band I came across some articles which say that the singer decided to start a solo career earlier this year and that the band Lunn-a-park is currently taking a break.
