One rather old-fashioned Lithuanian textbook I use teaches the following periphrastic tenses:

present perfect: aš esu matęs/matusi tą filmą
past perfect: aš buvau matęs/matusi tą filmą
... and similarly for future (with "busiu") and for past frequentative (with "budavau")

Now, all my other textbooks (more modern and colloquial ones) only teach the normal present, past and future tense (aš matau, mačiau, matysiu...). The periphrastic tenses are not in there at all.

I have not found a good explanation for the different use of past tense and present perfect. My Lithuanian tandem partner just says, you can use both, but she is not very good at explaining grammar.

So, when would I say either of the following?
Aš esu matusi tą filmą
Aš mačiau tą filmą

Is it like in English, for example like this?
Aš jau esu matusi tą filmą -> I have already seen it, to denote that something has been finished, with a valid result for the present time
Aš mačiau tą filmą vakar -> I saw it yesterday, to denote that something was done at a certain time in the past, and is not connected to the present time

Or is there something else in there? How do you use these two tenses?

Ar neturėtų būti:
present perfect: aš esu matęs/mačiusi tą filmą
past perfect: aš buvau matęs/mačiusi tą filmą

– pas mus Dzūkijoje tai galėtų ir taip būti:
present perfect: aš asu matis/matius tų filmų
past perfect: aš buvau matis/matius tų filmų

Ar neturėtų būti:
present perfect: aš esu matęs/mačiusi tą filmą
past perfect: aš buvau matęs/mačiusi tą filmą

Bet "buvau matęs" -- tai plusquamperfect'as, ar ne? O klausimas buvo, kuo skiriasi "mačiau" ir "esu matęs". But, aš manau, Mona teisingai suprato jų skirtingumą...

I am not an expert but I'd say you got it.
It is the same as in English.

Basically,
aš esu mačiusi (kažkada) = I have seen (sometime)
aš mačiau (vakar) = I saw (yesterday)

Lithuanian always "dives into the past" with "būti" and never with "turėti".

To go into more details, it doesn't really sound very peculiar if you use the simple past with sometime and say "aš mačiau kažkada" instead of "aš esu mačiusi kažkada". They are pretty much interchangeable.
But if you said "aš esu mačiusi vakar" it would sound very weird.

Na, skirtumas yra tarp „buvau matęs“, „esu matęs“ ir „mačiau“.
„buvau matęs“ – svarbu, kad jau anksčiau kažką esu matęs;
„esu matęs“ – svarbu, kad jau anksčiau kažką mačiau;
„mačiau“ – tiesiog, „matyti“ praeities laikas.
Pvz.: Šiandien rodys filmą – tokį (esu) matęs / mačiau.
Vakar rodė filmą – mačiau / buvau matęs.
