what does "lenne (ott/is) nemulass!" mean?

Postby chung » 2011-01-07, 3:36

I've seen variants of this expression a few times (especially "lenne nemulass" but also "lenne is nemulass") but am wondering what it means exactly. Does it have something to do with not making fun of someone?

Köszi!

I think it's something like "don't play with fire!", "don't make fun of that (because something dangerous will happen to you)"

Yes, I can confirm that. Literally it means something like ’there would be some have-no-fun’.

So, it's the negative imperative form of the verb "mulat" (to have fun) which is transformed into a noun. We studied that a month ago in our morphology classes and this is called "mondatból főnévsült alak", right CoBB? :P

Sounds about right. I wouldn’t have remembered that, it was so long ago.

"Lesz nemulass!" or "Lesz itt/ott nemulass!"
It's a pretty common saying. But I have never heard "Lenne nemulass".
The ones above are like. "One should prepare for some bigger and negative/surprising happening." More precisely, someone will do something bad, could even harm the other one."

Same here, I've never ever heard this expression in the conditional.
