Same here. I was surprised since our government is so against everything like that.

Finally managed to get there... Thanks for posting that and for filling the contour of Poland in orange. Moving away from the usual red was yet another revolutionary move here :D

And it has a connection to real events.

Happy polish-hungarian friendship day y'all. Let's celebrate by not trying to kill one another as is customary in Europe.

On the day of Polish-Hungarian friendship, I was working on Russian-Hungarian friendship :)

And I had prepared waving my Poland-flag which I bought there, but I wasn't even at home on that day.
But I mentioned it while talking I remember.

Üvegtigris - 80% loves it, the others just cant find it funny - I'm in the latter group. Otherwise, it's great you commemorated it with the Hungarians over there, BezierCurve. It means a lot for us. :)

Just a question: Where does Węgiersko come from in the Polish language? I know there's a lot of talk about how HUNgary got it's name from the Huns, and I guess the Hungarians can call their country Magyarórszag if they want to, but if the slavic language Croatian calls it Mađarska, I'm just curious why Poland calls it something different?

Hi VM,

I think that it works similarly in Russian (Vyengr) and also in Czech (Uher). It is believed, that the name "Węgier" came from "Ongur", which was the Slavonic name for many tribes living in the area between Ural and Caucasus. The supposed meaning according to PWN would be "ten (on) generations (gur, also meaning a shot)".

BezierCurve,
Thanks. Not that I completely understand, but this is a little bit why I find Hungarian such a fascinating language and a people. It's interesting to see the Polish view of Hungary. I think the fact that surrounding countries have a different word for "Hungarian" seems to indicate that different neighboring countries had differing experiences with or perceptions of Hungarians.

Nekem érdekes látni hogyan találnak a lengyelek Magyarországot. Nekem jelzi, hogyha a körülvevő országoknak arra (annak?) van (eltérő, különböző?) szavai, hogy azoknak a népeknek eltérő magyarokkal élményei voltak

Hűha, fogadom, illetve reményem, hogy sok megdöbbent magyar hozzászólóktól jönnek javítások

Really?
Many say that the name "magyar" somehow came from "Onogur" which meant eight (or ten?) tribes in some kind of language back then.

But of course there is another theory which says that manysi (Manshy?) and magyar came from the same root, which meant "man" originally.

We can only guess now, I suppose :)

Anyway, I think that "Lengyel" (which is also an exceptional name for Poles) came from "Ledzianie/Ledzanie", a Western Slavonic tribe?
