Hey guys, why no activity in the group? :doggy:

Shall we try and transcribe something? I like Sokak Röportajları. For example this one seems quite easy:

This video is nice: https://youtu.be/2XEWiAqpccc

People are asked how many languages they can say 'I love you' in.

Okay, but transcribing stuff can take time because even easy transcriptions are hard when you don't speak Turkish all that well. That reminds me, I've been thinking of reviving our King-Size Translations thread by attempting to translate more of "Gayet Ciddiyim!"

Here's my attempt at the first interview:

"Yaparken en çok zevk aldığınız şey nedir?"
"Yemek yemek."
"Yoga gelir aklıma, yoga."
"Mm...dişimi yapmak, aba." :?:
"Çalışmak."
"Gezmek."
"Em, şimdi ben hayatta aldığı kalmadığım için, yaptığım şeyden de zevk almıyorum." :?:
"En çok zevk aldığım şey. Joints almak." :?:
"Gezmek."
"Uyumak. O nişanda yok. :?: Uyumak."
"Araba sürmek."
"Edebiyat dersimde osturmak...erkekten. :?:"
(I have no idea what the next answer is).
"Kitap okumak."
"Müzik dinlemek. İnsan stalklamak da biliyorum!"
"Kakamı yapmak." :?:
"Hayla...Asin? Asin, Asin'le söyleyeceyip ???"
"Yüzmek."
"Bırak şimdi! Yüzmek. Yüzmek."
"Yaparken neden zevk alırız? Evet...kayma amı da yedim. Söylüyorum ???, seks."

And the second one:

"Kaç dilde 'seni seviyorum' diyebilirsiniz?"
"İki. I love you, eh, seni seviyorum."
"Türkçe 'seni seviyorum' oluyor, Kürtçe 'ez ji te hez dikim', Arapça ??? 'ya habibim' oluyor da. :?: Almanca 'eh lebı dıh' ( :P ), İngilizce 'I love you', Fransızca 'je t'aime'."
"??? beş dilde diyebiliyorum. I love you...gel ???, İspanyolcada neydi? 'Ich liebe dich', Almanya; 'Ya tube lubyu'...işte :?:, Rusça'ydı galiba...Yine :?: 'seni seviyorum', dört oldu. أنا محبك, beş oldu, tamam! 'Ez ji te hez dikim'!"
"Dile gerek yok, ben yürüyümle 'seni seviyorum' diyebiliyorum!" :?:
"Bir 'I love you', bir de 'seni seviyorum', Türkçe."
"İki dilde söyleyebiliyorum. Seni seviyorum, أنا محبك، يا serap. :?:"
"Kaç dilde 'seni seviyorum' diyebilirsiniz?"
"Bir! Seni seviyorum."
"Seni seviyorum, I love you, ih liebe dih."
(No idea what the next guy's saying).
"'Ich liebe dich'. 'Te quiero', ya da 'te amo.' İtalyancada da 'ti amo' olabilir. Bir de Fransızcada ???. 'Je...t'aime'. Evet, 'je t'aime'! ??? Seni seviyorum. Teşekkür ederim."
"Bir dilde, Türkçe: Seni seviyorum. [Then he says something beginning with 'başka', but I can't figure out what]."
"Te, ti, ti amo. Ich liebe dich. Seni seviyorum. I love you. Sarange [사랑해]. Beş. Bir de 'habibi' söylüyoruz, altı!" :?:
"Seni seviyorum, أنا حبك."
"Ti amo, come stai?"
(Can't really tell what the next guy says at first).
"On var."
(Interviewer says something like "söyle bana").
"Seni seviyorum. Seni seviyorum, hehe. Seni seviyorum. Seni seviyorum. Seni seviyorum seni öptüm!" :?:
"Beş dilde derim var aldı. :?: Ich liebe dich, ik hou van je, أنا محبك, seni seviyorum [can't hear what else he says]."
"Ben de seni seviyorum!"
"I love you, je t'aime."
"İngilizce 'I love you', başka dil bilmem."
"Seni seviyorum."
"'Seni seviyorum', Türkçe. 'I love you'. 'Ya habibi' her oda bulur. :?: [Dunno what else he says]."
"İngilizce söylüyorum, 'I love you', Türkçe 'seni seviyorum', Romanca 'iuvre meu' :?:, Rusça я тебя любlyı, Fransızca...'je t'aime'!"
"I love you, seni seviyorum, sarange."
"İki. Seni seviyorum, I love you."
"Azerbaycan'da 'səni sevirəm', Türk dilinde 'seni seviyorum', Rus dilinde я люблю тебя."
"I love you, ich liebe dich...'je t'aime' da var!" :?:
"I love you, أنا محبك, ez di hez dihim, bir de...Türkçe söylüyorum. Seni seviyorum, aşkım."
"Ben de seni seviyorum."

Your interpretation sounded really obscene because in case you didn't know, 'am' actually means cunt, vagina. :P :D

Okay, thanks! I intend to...at some point. :para:

Actually, what if anything would be useful for you at this point? :hmm: Isn't Turkish practically your second/third native language? :P

I figured it might not be, but I also thought it'd probably be easier with all the languages in it.

Thanks so much for the corrections in both languages!

I wish! My Turkish is C1 (it's both my estimate and the exam result that I took this winter), and I don't really know how I can effectively improve it to C2. Eskandar advised me to use preparation materials that natives use for university exams (similar to SAT or GRE in the USA); seems like nice advice, but not sure I'll be able to do it for long because it's probably boring. :P Perhaps reading is the only way that is fun and effective.

Why highly? Did you use it for emphasis (to translate the emphatic component of anlata anlata)?

That's just how tureng translated the idiom, but maybe the meanign is not so idiomatic in this context. So maybe it's more like:

She won't stop talking about her birthday.

Example: Araya araya yeni bir ev kiraladım.

I hate being creative.

I didn't think about the possibility that they might be talking about doing one thing by not doing another thing. Oopsie :doggy:

Exercise 6

1. Annem, yemeği ve temizliği şarkı söyleyerek yapıyor.
2. Doğum günüme gelerek beni çok üzdün. <- Okay, yeah, after looking at Saim's answers gelmeyerek definitely makes more sense here.
3. Beni bu şirkete müdür olarak gönderdiler.
4. Boş zamanlarımı kitap okuyarak değerlendiriyorum.
5. Ülkemiz giderek zenginleşiyor.

Exercise 7

1. Spor yapa yapa sağlıklı bir insan oldum.
2. Göz göre göre yalan söylüyor. - He told a lie while looking (someone) in the eyes. (I figure I'm using a slightly different version of this book from Saim).
3. Adem utana sıkıla patronundan zam istedi.
4. Ayşe doğum gününü anlata anlata bitiremedi.
5. O adam her zaman düşüne düşüne konuşur. <- Instead of saying he talks without thinking, I said he thinks before he talks. Apparently, this is a grammatical way to say that.

Exercise 8

1. b (Müzik dinleyerek ders çalışırım - I study while listening to music)
2. a (Şarkı söyleyerek yemek yaparım - I make a meal while singing)
3. ç (Patlamış mısır yiyerek film seyrettik)
4. d (İstemeyerek seni üzdüm)
5. c (Yürüyerek okula gideriz - We go to school on foot)

Exercise 9

1. Oruç tutarak bir ayda 3 kilo verdim (I lost 3 kilos by fasting).
2. Kopya çekerek sınavdan geçtim (I passed the test by cheating).
3. Kitaplar okuya okuya Türkçe öğrendim (I learned Turkish by reading books).
4. Araba sürerek eve gittim. (I went home by car).
5. Pazar yapa yapa yeni bir ev kiraladım (I bought a new house by bargaining (for it?)). :P
6. Yatarak dinlendim (I rested by lying down).
7. Tarifi bakarak yemek yaptım (I made the meal by looking at the recipe).
8. Telefonda sohbet ederek rezervasyon yaptırdım (I got the reservation done by (talking on the) phone).
9. Örgü örerek televizyon izledim (I watched TV while knitting (fabric)).
10. Ağ tarayıcısı açarak internete girdim. (I went online by opening a web browser). :?:

Göz göre göre is kind of idiomatic (you can say something like "devlet bizi göz göre göre soyuyor").

Okay, then I'm going with the LangMedia text...which you actually already did! Well, here's my vocab list for the second paragraph anyway:

çeşit - variety
değişik - different
düzenlenmek - to be organized
çok farklı kültürleri olan yerler var - there are places with very different cultures
geleneksel - traditional
gürültü - noise
resmi - formal
saygılı - respectful

Maybe GLOSS would also provide helpful study materials for this group, and I also recommend LangMedia's Turkish in Turkey pages. Of course, they're way more basic than CultureTalk, but understanding even the simplest dialogues in those pages is pretty hard, and even the first dialogue about asking for directions has some new vocab for me. :)

And of course, we can always just do another LangMedia text.

That's how Turks saw America in 1995 (the year when the song was writen). Would you guys be interested in doing the lyrics?
