Mikail’in Türkçe ve Azerîce tartışması

Postby Michael » 2017-01-26, 15:00

(I created this thread in order to branch out from the ambiguous TAC forum into this particular subforum, which has a narrower audience, meaning more chances at getting the kind of feedback I seek. I had originally posted what is now the topic post of this thread on the TAC subforum on 25 Jan, but I've moved it here for the aforementioned reason.)

Həmçinin, qabiliyyət səviyyəm barədə kifayət möhkəm hiss etdikcə Azərbaycan dili səviyyəmi A1 səviyyəsindən A2 səviyyəsinədək təkmilləşdirmişəm.

(FTW: This is the Azeri text I wrote above, adapted to what I know of the rules of Yeñi Osmanlıca, a reformed version of Classical Ottoman orthography that was developed throughout the final 70 years of the Ottoman Empire. However, I've just started learning the rules of Ottoman script, so any corrections would be appreciated!)

[flag=]en[/flag] Well, here's the article I promised. I avoided finishing translating it for almost a week because the syntax in some parts was too mind-bending. But I took the initiative today to, quote, face my demons, unquote, and attempt to correctly translate as much as I can. Also, I now feel confident enough in my abilities so as to upgrade my level in Azeri from A1 to A2.

“Amerikada yaşayan müsəlmanları öldürməyi nəzərdə tutursunuz[1]?” (2016’cı ilin dekabrının 30’unda nəşr etmiş)
“Do you ever think about[1] killing Muslims who live in America?” (published on 30 December 2016)
1. nəzərdə tutmaq | نظرده طوتمق to come to mind, ponder (in this context: to think about)

Britaniyanın «The Guardian» qəzetinin Vaşinqtondakı siyasi müxbiri[2] Sabrina Siddiqui ABŞ-dakı son prezident seçkilərini işıqlandırmağından[3] yazır. Məqalədə deyilir:
Washington, DC political correspondent[2] Sabrina Siddiqui of Britain's "The Guardian" newspaper writes to shed some light[3] on the recent presidential election in the US. It is said in the article:
2. müxbir | مخبر reporter, correspondent, interviewer, associate (in media); has the same Semitic roots as the word xəbər x-b-r "(the) news, notification"
3. işıqlandırmaq | ایشقلاندیرمق to cast light upon, shine a light on

«Biz onların hamısını qırmalıyıq». Bu sözlər seçicilərin dilindən tökülürdü[4]. Onun özü isə sanki evini basmış[5] həşəratlardan danışırdı. Əslində isə o, müsəlmanlardan danışırdı.
“We must decimate them all.” These words leapt[4] from the mouths (=tongues) of voters. It was as if they spoke of insects having colonized[5] their homes. In actuality, they were talking about Muslims.
4. dil{+PS.}dən tökmək | دیلدن توکمك to sprout words, strew from the mouth
5. basmaq | باسمق to overgrow, flood, overrun (in this context: invade, colonize)

Qəfildən müsəlman kimliyimi düşündüm.
I instantly thought of the fact that I'm a Muslim myself.

«BU SÖZLƏR MƏNİ QORXUTDU»
“THESE WORDS FRIGHTENED ME”

Müsəlman qadının ABŞ-da seçkini işıqlandırması
A Muslim woman elaborates on the election in the US

Kentukki ştatından senatorluğa namizəd[6] Rand Paul-un çıxışını izləməyə[7] gəlmiş bir seçici ilə söhbətə başladım. Paul milli təhlükəsizlikdən danışmağa başlayanda, seçici ABŞ-ı müsəlmanlardan təmizləmək lazım olduğunu dedi.
I began to have a conversation with a voter who had come to watch[7] Kentucky state senatorial candidate[6] Rand Paul's speech. When Paul began to talk about national security, the voter said that it was necessary to rid the United States of Muslims.
6. namizəd | نامی‌زد candidate, nominee
7. izləmək | ایزله‌مك to go after, follow up, pursue, stalk, observe

«Məhv etmək deyəndə, siz Amerikada yaşayan müsəlmanları öldürməyi nəzərdə tutursunuz?», –deyə söhbəti davam etdirdim[8].
I continued[8] the conversation, “When you say obliterate, do you guys think about killing Muslims living in America?”
8. davam etdirmək | دوام ایتدیرمك to proceed, continue

«Bəli, onlar çıxıb getməsələr, onları öldürməyə başlayacağıq», - o dedi.
“Yes, if they don't get the fuck up out of here, we'll start killing them,” he said.

ABŞ-da keçirilən əvvəlki seçkiləri işıqlandırdığım zaman heç vaxt yollarda öz təhlükəsizliyimə görə narahat olmamışam. Kirayə götürdüyüm maşınla tanımadığım ştatda tək səyahət etdiyimi nəzərə alsaq[9], bu sözlər məni qorxutdu.
I had never feared for my own safety as much as when I covered the last US presidential elections. If we take into account[9] the fact that I traveled by myself with a rental car in a state with which I wasn't familiar, these words frightened me.
9. nəzərə almaq | نظره آلمق to take into consideration, pay attention, heed, reckon

Yalnız indi, geriyə baxanda, anlayıram ki, 2016-cı ilin seçki kampaniyasında qəzəb[10] və qorxu dominantlıq təşkil edib.
But now, looking back, I remember that demagoguery (=the domination of anger[10] and fear) was made ample use of in the 2016 electoral campaign.
10. qəzəb | قضب wrath, anger, rampage, etc.

XƏBƏRDARLIQ
CAUTION

[…]† and I was one of the hundreds of reporters staying in hotel rooms. But there were very few Muslims among these journalists.
Cümlənin bu qismindən sintaksis anlamadım. Oxuyan heç biriniz mənə kömək edə bilərmi?

«Hicab taxmıram[11] və müsəlman olduğumu zahiri[12] görkəmimlə[13] büruzə vermirəm[14]. Bəlkə də buna görə seçicilər çox zaman müsəlmanlar barədə düşündüklərini mənə deməkdən çəkinmirdilər[15]», – müəllif yazır.
The author writes, “I don't wear[11] a hijab nor do I display[14] the fact that I'm a Muslim through my external[12] appearance[13]. Maybe that's why a lot of the time the voters didn't hold back[15] on telling me their thoughts on Muslims.”
11. taxmaq | طاقمق to wear, put on, don, sport
12. zahirî | ظاهری external, conspicuous, ostentatious, seeming

14. büruzə vermək | بروزه ویرمك to show, display, bring out (i.e. a quality)
15. çəkinmək | چکینمك to refrain, hold back, abstain

Cənubi Karolinada bir kişi seçici zorakılığı[16] dəstəklədiyini[17] və konsentrasiya düşərgələrinin[18] yaradılması arzusunu dilə gətirib. Bir yaşlı qadınsa müəllifi xəbərdar edib ki, İŞİD («İslam Dövləti» silahlı qruplaşması[19]) özünə gəlinlər[20] axtarır, onu oğurlaya[21] bilərlər, buna görə də o, ehtiyatlı olmalıdır. «Redaktorlarına de, sənə cangüdənlər[22] versinlər», – həmin qadın söyləyib.
A male voter in South Carolina expressed his support[17] of violence[16] against them and his desire for them to be placed in concentration camps[18]. Some elderly lady mentioned to the author that ISIS (the radical group[19] known as the "Islamic State") goes around looking for brides[20], they could abduct[21] her (=the author), therefore she should tread with caution. “They ought to give you and the editors bodyguards[22],” said the same lady.
16. zorakılıq | زورآکیلق violence, blackmail, racket
17. dəstəkləmək | دستکله‌مك to support, back up

Bu mətn bölməsini başa düşmək mənimçün lap çətindi; olsun ki, çox yanlışlıqca tərcümə etmişəm.

Sabrina Siddiqui yazır ki, seçki kampaniyası ərzində peşəkarlığını[23] qoruyaraq reportajlarında öz fikirlərini səsləndirməyib[24]. O müşahidə edib[25] ki, Amerikanın əksər xəbər redaksiyalarında ən yaxşı halda bir-iki müsəlman çalışır. Əksəriyyətində isə heç bu da yoxdur. :?:
Sabrina Siddiqui writes that she didn't make her own thoughts clear[24] in the reports, saving her professionalism[23] for the election campaign. She noted[25] that, at best, a few Muslims work at most American news editorial offices. In general, though, there are none at all.

Onun sözlərinə görə, bir suriyalı cütlük Virciniyada Rubio-nun yürüşü zamanı ona yaxınlaşaraq işini davam etdirməyə həvəsləndirib[33]. Ayovada Hillary Clinton-un yürüşündə rastlaşdığı banqladeşli mühacirlərsə[34] televiziyada siyasətdən danışan müsəlman sima gördüklərinə görə sevindiklərini deyiblər.

It seems you were confused by the syntax here. The first easiest element we can identify is 'onu', which is clearly the direct object of the verb of the clause we are trying to translate. It obviously stands for the journalist mentioned earlier in the sentence.

So, now, if we look at the verb: 'məcbur edib': ('forced'), we already have something meaningful to work with: 'forced her'. There is no passive here, by the way.

Going backwards we can see that 'tərəddüdə' is in the dative case, which is governed by the verb 'məcbür edib'. So now we have a longer sentence 'forced her to hesitate'.

It is now obvious that the subject is '(onun) müsəlman kimliyi', 'her Muslim identity', ie 'her being a Muslim' as this is the last remaining element that we have not identified yet.

So the sentence should read as 'Although she wanted to address questions related to this (topic) to Rubio, the fact that she was a Muslim made her hesitate (to do so)'.

Bununla bağlı means 'related to this'.

seçki kampaniyası: 'the election campaign', this is a pretty straightforward genitive construction.
ərzində: 'during', this is a time postposition.
So: 'during the election campaign' and not 'for the election campaign'.

I might be quibbling but I believe 'qoruyaraq' should be translated as 'keeping' rather than 'saving' here.
Which gives us: 'keeping her professionalism during the election campaign'.

I'm not 100% sure here, but to me, it sounds like the Syrian couple encourage her to continue doing her job. It looks like işini refers to the journalist's work. I might be wrong, though!

I hope this helps :)

Sessions, speaking in the Senate before the vote, said, "There is no greater honor[13] than representing[12] people of dedication[10] in the world's largest institutional[11] body. :?: I take on all the issues we have with gratitude and I thank the voters who entrusted me to become the new Attorney General. I completely understand the big responsibility[14] of this trust."

ardından means 'after', not 'before'.
alama halkı - it should be Alabama halkı
karışlıyorum - it should be karşılıyorum (I accept with gratitude all our discussions)
görev - you translated as 'trust', but görev is rather job, duty, assignment

karalamak - you translated as 'to discount', but it's 'to blacken' (from kara - black), to defame

Oylamadan önceki tartışmalarda Demokrat Partili Elizabeth Warren ve diğer Demokrat Partili senatörler, Martin Luther King'in eşinin, siyah seçmenleri sindirmekle[16] suçladığı[17] Sessions'ın 1986'da federal hâkim olmasına karşı çıktığını hatırlattı.
Democratic Party member Elizabeth Warren as well as other Democratic senators called attention to the fact that they came out in honor of Martin Luther King against Sessions' 1986 appointment as a federal judge who menacingly[16] discriminated[17] against black voters in discussions before the vote. :?:

... called attention to the fact that the spouse (eş) of Martin Luther King objected against Sessions' 1986 appointment as a federal judge, accusing him of intimidation of black voters.

Sessions'ın o dönemki adaylığı, söylediği iddia edilen[18] ırkçı[19] sözler ve Ku Klux Klan'a yakın görülen açıklamaları nedeniyle Senato tarafından reddedilmişti.
Session's then appointment was opposed on account of alleged[18] racist[19] remarks that he said and his holding views close to those of the KKK.

his comments (açıklamalar) which looked (görülen) close to those of KKK

ilham is inspiration rather than influence

Finally you have posted something in a language I can understand. :) However close people would claim Azeri and Turkish are, their written standards have clearly diverged a lot.

I think that will be the last Turkish article I try to parse through for a while, at least until after I've spent a considerable amount of time actively studying Turkish itself and have gotten down all the fundamental Turkish-specific vocabulary. It was definitely more of a chore for me, as opposed to the fun challenge that are Azeri articles, since I only have a passive knowledge of Turkish. However, I decided to have a go at it anyways because, "Better to die trying, than to have done nothing at all". :P

Can I hope that you will stop calling them "Turkish of Turkey" and "Turkish of Iran"? :P Not that it bothers me much, but it just doesn't make sense IMHO to use the same name for languages which are so apparently different. They definitely share largely the same vocabulary, but what idiomatic in one is often not idiomatic in the other.

I can't help myself; I'm a huge Iran nerd. :P But no, I realized a long time ago that my calling them by the same name may have come across as pretentious. That's why I've largely stopped doing that, beginning from a month ago, which you should have noticed.

But I will never actually stop thinking of Azeri as Iranian Turkish in my mind. I do still in fact view the Azeri which I speak to be as Turkish as, well, Turkish (but with a much more decidedly Persian, and to a lesser degree Russian, flair to it). And when it comes down to it, Azerbaijani is Turkish of Iran. That's why I was so stubborn about my stance, going as far as to risk looking pedantic.

The autonym Azerbaijan comes from an old Iranian language, from āzar-pāyegān "place of fire" (آتشگاه ātaš-gāh in Persian). What is now known as Azerbaijani came about from the cultural intermixing of the old Azeri people of the region, who were a Persianized Caucasian people, with migrated Seljuk settlers. The unique variety of Turkish that developed here eventually came to supplant the Old Azeri language and thus eventually "took the domain name", so to speak.

I realize that understanding written Azeri is as difficult for you as understanding written (and spoken) Turkish is for me, and I still have poor Azeri listening comprehension skills, so if you could go through any of them, I would greatly appreciate that, but I don't expect you or anybody else to check them. I like publishing translations even without getting any feedback on them merely because it greatly helps me in my quest to tackle Turkic syntax.

Dağıstanda tikinti obyektlərində işləyən yüzlərlə azərbaycanlı Dağıstanın miqrasiya xidməti tərəfindən qeyri-rəsmi şəkildə işlədikləri üçün 3 gün idman zalında yeməksiz və susuz saxlanılıb, saxlanılan işçilərdən biri BBC Azərbaycancaya bildirib.
One of the workers who was held captive told BBC Azeri that hundreds of Azerbaijanis who were working on construction projects were held captive in a sports facility for 3 days without food or water in a gym by Dagestan's immigration authorities on account of them working illegally.

Adının çəkilməsini istəməyən işçi, o və həmvətənlərinin 9 fevral səhər saatlarında saxlanılmasına rəsmi səbəbin tikdikləri binanın sahibinin hakimiyyət orqanlarına özünü təqdim etməməsi olduğunu bildirib.
A worker who didn't want his name to be made public stated that the actual reason that he and his fellow countrymen were held captive during the morning hours of 9 Feb was that they didn't want the owner of the building they were constructing to report them to governmental bodies. :?:

Əvvəla 400-ə yaxın azərbaycanlı saxlandığını deyən mənbə[1], onlarla insanın nəzarət[2] altında olduqları dövrdə qaçdığını bildirib. Məlumata görə sonda təxminən 200 nəfər saxlanılıb.
The source[1], who initially said that nearly 400 Azerbaijanis were held, stated that people fled with them who, at the time, were under surveillance[2]. Approximately 200 individuals ended up being taken into custody according to reports.

Şənbə günü buraxıldıqlarını deyən işçi, hər kəsin pasportunun götürüldüyünü və bazar günü yalnız patentləri olan işçilərin pasportlarının qaytarıldığını deyib. Patentli olan işçilərin sayı ən azı 60 olub.
The worker, who said that they were taken into custody on Saturday, said that everyone's passport was confiscated and only the passports of those workers who had papers would be returned. The number of workers with papers was at least 60.

Lakin o həmçinin bildirib ki, patentsiz işçilər çərşənbə axşamı günü məhkəməyə getməlidirlər.
But he also stated that workers without papers would have to go to trial on Tuesday.

The retention of the Azerbaijani citizens was sanctioned by the Republic of Dagestan Interior Affairs Office, speaking to BBC Azeri, but he denied any allegation that their number was 400.

Başqa məlumat verməkdən imtina edən rəsmi, yazılı şəkildə müraciətə[8] cavab yazacağını bildirib, lakin bu məqalə dərc[9] olunduğu zaman BBC Azərbaycancanın sorğusuna hələ ki, cavab gəlməyib.

Müsahibimiz, saxlanıldığı müddətdə onlara Azərbaycan səfirliyi və ya digər hökumət qurumlarından yardım və ya müraciət gəlmədiyini iddia edib.
