I'm a little rusty, so I've only made it through the first four lines so far, but I thought I'd post them anyway:

Alaaddin av için dışarı çıkmıstı.
Aladdin had gone out for hunting.

Karısı sihirbaze lambayı verdüp [?] yerine yeni bir lamba aldı, sihirbaz lambayı elina alır almaz oğuşturdu, peri görüntü. Sihirbaz:
His wife gave the lamp to the sorcerer and in its place took a new lamp, the sorcerer, once he had the lamp in his hand, rubbed it, and the genie appeared. The sorcerer:

Bu sarayı, içindeki hizmetçilarla, hanımla beraber Afrikaya götür, dedi.
Take this palace and the servants in it, together with the lady to Africa, he said.

Sihirbaz gözünü açıp kapayınca kadar kendini Afrikada sarayda buldu.
By the time the sorcerer opened and closed his eyes, the sorcerer found himself in Africa in a palace.

I've been way too busy lately with other stuff and my language learning is basically at a stand-still :( -- so your break in posting worked out nicely for me. Hopefully I can get some extra free time soon but I'm a little afraid to find out what my Turkish is like now after so long a break.

I had nothing better to do so I started transcribing one of the stories from Wells' "The Literature of the Turks", hopefully this will keep you guys entertained until kalemiye gets her computer fixed.
Though it sounds a bit odd to modern ears, I've kept the English as it is in the book.

THE WOOD-CUTTER'S WIFE.

In former times, in a certain town, there was a young man, a wood-cutter. He had a cruel, sharp-tongued wife.

Continually, whatever the wood-cutter earned, his wife took it from him, so that she did not leave him a farthing.

Ve gâh gece yemeğı tuzlu olup oduncu, 'bu gece pişirdiğin yemek tuzlu geldi' dedikte ertesi gece yemeğe hiç tuz katmayıp tuzsuz pişirirdi.

Sometimes, if the supper were too salt, and the wood-cutter said: "To-night the supper is too salt," the next night she put no salt in and cooked it without salt.

Kezalik 'tuzu yok' dedikte vafir tuz katıp ekilden âri ederdi.

In the same way, if he remarked: "There is no salt in it," then she would put in too much, and make it uneatable.

One day the wood-cutter hid a few pence from his wife, to buy rope with.

Gece oldukta avrat parayı oduncunun koynunda bulup eyitti

When it was night, finding them in his pocket, she said:

The wood-cutter swore that he had not, but she did not believe him. The woman replied: "I hope they may hang you with that rope!"

She went a little more forward. Again the wood-cutter called out, saying: "I told you to go back, and you go forward. Go back - back!"
The woman said: "I shall go forward," and went a step more forward.

The stone under her was not firm, and slipped, and she fell into the well. The wood-cutter, as he could not help it, paid no attention, loaded his asses and went home.

Glad you like it. Actually there are some mistakes (which I've just corrected) and some words i'm not totally sure of. The problem is the original text almost never uses alef madde ( آ ), which is important in determining the vowel harmony of certain words like ayıtmak/eyitmek (both are listed in the dictionary), and other orthographic weirdness.

The Ifrit said: "Oh! youth, fear me not! May God be pleased with you. You have saved me from great torture, and I can never forget it till the Day of Judgment." The wood-cutter answered: "What tortures were you in?"

Çünkü ifrit ol yaprakları verip ve macerayı yığıta ta'lim etmişti, ancak yığıt inanmayıp mukayyet olmadı.

When the Ifrit gave him the leaves and told him what we have related, the youth did not believe him, and paid no attention.

The wood-cutter came, and said, "I will go and cure her, with God's permission." They immediately brought him to the man who came from the king. They started at once.

Now, the king had a friend, a king also, and the Ifrit loved his daughter, and was always plaguing that girl. Hearing that the other king's daughter had recovered, he (her father) sent a man and asked for his son-in-law to cure his daughter. The king sent him.

THE END.

Might do another one of these in a week or so.

THE WOMAN WITH TWO HUSBANDS.

(The tale of the twenty-forth vezir.)

In former times there was a crafty woman, in the city of Cairo, called Dallat-ul-Muhtal. She had two husbands, and each one thought she was his own wife, and for a long time she was wife to both.

The men were completely unaware of this state of affairs. As regards their calling: one of these men was a sharper (con artist), and the other a thief; and both were pupils of the woman.

One day the thief went to the bazaar and sold an article, and took the money. Another person meeting the man to whom he had delivered the article, cried out,

"Elhamdüllah, nişan bilindi sair malım dahi sendedir, tez bana söyle!" dedi. Ol adam eyitti, "Sözün (?) söyle ben bu malı satın baha ile aldım, sen ise bana şöyle diyerek benden böyle mal istersen."

"Thanks be to God! I have found a clue, you have got my other property; come, speak quickly!" The man replied, "Don't talk nonsense! I bought this and paid for it. You talk thus because you want this property."

The thief saw them, and at once took to his heels, and came home. He said to the woman: "Wife! my robberies have been found out; bring me a piece of bread and I will go elsewhere, until this row has blown over."

The woman prepared a cake and a lamb's tail, and cutting them in two, gave the thief a half of the cake and a half of the lamb's tail. The thief took them, and went on his way.

After a time the sharper came too, and said: "Wife! my swindling has been detected, give me a piece of bread. I will not appear for a few days, and go somewhere else." The woman gave the sharper the remaining half of the lamb's tail, and he departed.

Ayyar geldi.

The sharper approached, and looked at his own cake and the thief's. He saw they resembled each other. They put them together, and it was one cake. They then put the pieces of the lamb's tail together, and found they were one tail.

The sharper was astonished, and said: "There's no offence in asking. Where do you come from?" The thief said: "I come from Cairo." The sharper replied: "Where is your house."

The thief said: "My house is Dallat-ul-Muhtal's house, in Cairo; and she is my wife." The sharper said: "That house is mine, and that woman is my wife, and I have lived there for how many years. Now why do you tell lies?"

At last the sharper said: "The is no use in our quarelling here; come, let us go to the woman, and ask her. Then we shall see whose wife she is." The two arose, and came to the woman.

I have to catch up with the text, but it was a very good text and far more advanced than the one I posted. I have a tale to post, I hope I have enough time this weekend to post at least the first couple of paragraphs and ask questions about the text you posted. Thanks again for your contribution Zhiguli!

Merhaba!

I am sorry for my absence. I don't really have time to sit down and devote some time to Ottoman Turkish, I printed Zhiguli's text but I had little time to read it carefully. As you know, I am very busy lately, not only because I have lessons, but because I have lots of homework, readings and projects, plus some relatives are coming (again  ) to my place this weekend...

Nevertheless, I decided I would keep learning Ottoman Turkish in my little free time. I have been working on a text about animals (hayvanlar). I think it can be interesting, not only because reading and learning about animals is always nice, but also because we will learn some specific vocabulary, while learning how to write a small "article" in Turkish.

Karada gezen, havada uçan, yerde sürünen, deniz yaşayan mahlûkatın hepsine (hayvan) nâmi verilir.

The creatures that walk the earth, fly through the sky, crawl on the ground, live in the sea are all called "animal".

Hayvalar, türlü türlüdür.

Animals are diverse.

My translations into English are poor, if somebody can improve them, I welcome any help!

Sıcakkanlı olan memeli hayvanlardan bâzısının şekl-i hâricisi, balığa benzer.

The external morphology of some of the warm-blooded mammal animals is similar to that of fishes.

"Balına" bu cinsdendir.

The whale is one of these.

A small amount of them that are able to fly resemble to birds. (lt's not a literal translation)

Yarasa bu kabildendir.

The bat is one of this kind.

Dört ayaklı ve memeli olan hayvalar, ayrılır.

We have to distinguish between two kinds of four-legged mammals.

One group is called 'predatory', for example: lion, tiger, wolf.

Diğer takımına: (hayvânât-ı ehliyye) denir. Kedi, köpek, at, eşek, gibi.

The other group is called 'domestic/tame animals', for example: cat, dog, horse, donkey.

İkinci sınıf; memeliler gibi yine sıcakkanlı hayvanlardır; fakat bunlar, yavrularını yumurtadan çıkaran iki ayaklı, iki kanatlı hayvanlardır, ki hepsine birden (kuş) ismi verilir.

The second group, like the mammals, are warm-blooded animals, but these, their offsprings come out from eggs, they are two-legged and two-winged animals, and to all of them the name of "bird" is given.

Birds fly in the sky and walk the earth.

Başlıcaları şunlardir.

These are the main ones:

Tavuk, kaz, ördek, papağan, tavus, leylek, kumru, güvercin*, bıldırcım, kartal, çaylak, keklik, bülbül, karga, kanarya, kırlangıç, atmaca, doğan*, karabatak.

Chicken, goose, duck, parrot, peacock, stork, dove/pigeon, dove/pigeon, quail, eagle, rook, grouse, nightingale, crow, canary, martin, hawk, hawk, cormorant.

From this small sentence there are two words with a tricky spelling. I will single them out now:
کوکرجین - Güvercin. Here ک has the value of v.
لکلک - Leylek. Here ک has the value of y.

* can anybody explain the difference between these two words? I couldn't find anywhere which bird they are refering too, and I don't think there are two names for a single bird listed here.

Kumru-Güvercin

Kumru is slimmer than pigeon. Its color is mostly brown. Kumrus are monogamous; if one of partners dies, the other lives lonely.

Atmaca is a member of falconiformes. Atmacas can be domesticated and are used for hunting.
