Periphrastic constructions

Postby Babelfish » 2005-12-09, 13:30

Latin doesn't have a present passive participle, nor a past active participle. I've read somewhere that it used some periphrastic constructions to express those when needed... Does anybody know an example?

There are two Periphrastic Conjugations, known respectively as the First (or Active) and the Second (or Passive).

The First Periphrastic Conjugation combines the Future Active Participle with the forms of esse, and denotes a future or intended action.
e.g. amaturus sum, I am about to love,
amaturus eram, I was about to love,...

The Second Periphrastic Conjugation combines the Gerundive with the forms of esse, and denotes obligation, necessity, or propriety.
e.g. amandus sum, I am to be, must be, loved,
amandus eram, I was to be, had to be, loved, ...[/b]

I think i got the point if you were meaning how you'd be able to build a present passive participle and a subsequentl past passive participle.

They used the cum + subjunctive periphrastic.
I'd rather have some examples:

Present participle

Active: Marius deos laudans canebat
Passive: Deus cum Mario laudentur audiebant

Well the example is quite silly but i guess it suits your doubt..

Examples are often much more silly so don't worry about it :P Yes, that's what I meant. It took me some time to figure out the sentence, though (got confused with the preposition cum + ablative, at first  ). 10x!
