Certificate for children's choir

Postby Ikbent » 2013-05-29, 10:28

Salve,

My girlfriend is conductor of a children's choir. She wants to make certificates for the children for when they have their 5 or 10 year aniversary with the choir. We thought it would be really cool to make those in latin, also since the choir sings in a catholic church.

Could you guys please take a look at what I constructed?

magno cum gaudio hae
Litterae Testimonialis
indicant
(name child in acc (?))
in choro
(name choir in abl. (?))
cantavisse, anima magna, pro quinque annos

Oh, just in case my latin is too bad: what I was trying to say is
With great joy, this testimonial letter indicates that (name child) has sung with great enthusiasm for five years in the (name choir) choir.
:-)

Regards,
Robert

Salve, Robert!

Ecce exemplum:

Summo cum gaudio (Latin prefers superlative)
hae litterae
testificantur
Mariam van de Velde
[nomen: acc. correct]
per quinque annos
maximo animi ardore
(Latin prefers superlative)
in choro puerili [in choro: abl.correct]
cantavisse.
Lugduni Batavorum, IV Kal. Iun. MMXIII

[nomen subscriptum: nom.]

Translation (verbatim):

With great joy
this document
testifies
that Maria van de Velde
has sung
for five years
with great enthusiasm
in the children's choir.

Ago tibi gratias, that looks very nice!

What is the correct case for the town name? I see that you used Lugduni, instead of Lugdunum. Is this a locativus?

Robert

Thank you so much!

I have one more question: the choir is more a youth choir than a children's choir. Would that be:

choro iuventi
or
choro iuventis?

Vale!

Salve, Roberte!
Licet tibi scribere aut "in choro iuventutis" (i. e.: "in the choir of the youth"; iuventutis = gen. of subst. iuventus) aut "in choro iuvenili" (i. e. "in the juvenile choir"; iuvenili = abl. of adj. iuvenilis). Neque "iuventi" neque "iuventis" verba sunt Latina.
