Live to Love & Love to Live

Postby Kwota » 2012-05-11, 18:50

How do you translate this to latin? I've seen many different ways to say it. I've found 'Ama Vivere et Vive Amare' to be the shortest which I like. Would this be correct???

Thanks.

I don't think you can use the infinitive in that way; my translation would be something like "ama ut vivas ac viva vive ut ames".

Wouldn't it be "vive ut ames"? But otherwise it looks plausible to me.

Would another possibility be "vive ad amandum ac ama ad vivendum" ?

I don't see why not. And there are other potential options involving the gerund like "causa amando ... causa vivendo".

Vince scripsit / wrote:... And there are other potential options involving the gerund like "causa amando ... causa vivendo".
Vehementer doleo quod erras; scribi enim oportebat "amandi causa" resp. "vivendi causa" (causa: abl., "usu. placed after gen. it governs", cf. OLD s. v. causa, p. 290).
