Is this correct?

Postby AlbaRules » 2011-10-13, 1:29

If I am saying "I give my thanks to you", is this a correct translation?

It's just the "gratiam" I am confused about. Should it be something else?

"Do gratiam mei ad te"

Thanks

Far more interested in Scottish Gaelic though as I have least experience with it. Would love to learn Welsh and Ancient Greek though will get to later.

Hi, salve!
I’m sorry, your translation is neither grammatically nor idiomatically correct, it’s a typical Latin anglicism.
There are three main expressions (cf. Oxford Latin Dictionary s.v. gratia):
(1) gratias agere alicui = to express one’s gratitude to a person, to thank him
(2) gratiam habere alicui = to feel grateful
(3) gratiam referre (reddere) alicui = to make return for some service rendered, to recompense a person
Result: I give my thanks to you > Gratias tibi ago.
:D

Thanks, Bernard :)

I was going for Anglicanized Latin, because the people I am thanking, don't have a clue how to speak Latin in the least, and I don't want to confuse them too much.

I guess I also forgot to mention I have like 0 experience translating English to Latin

But I will use the version you have provided. Thank you very much :)

Salve, amice!
I forgot to mention the plural version (plural you): Gratias vobis ago.
