Tanslation: it is hard to be

Postby Boself » 2010-07-19, 17:02

How would one translate the following typical sentence in Latin:

"It is hard to be + adverb"

e.g. It is hard to be sincere, it is hard to be brilliant etc

"arduus est..."?

Thanks!

I would use "difficilis," although I imagine that "arduus" would work.

"Sincerus/simplex/candidus esse difficilis est"
"Ingeniosus esse difficilis est"

You'd have to use a neuter form of the adjective, since the infinitive is really the subject here and the infinitive is a neuter gerund.

difficile est loqui Latine - to speak Latin is difficult
cum non pluat, difficile est agricola esse - when it doesn't rain, it's hard to be a farmer.
dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country.
