Lingua Latina - Bastian

Postby Bastian » 2010-07-19, 14:30

Salvete! Nomen mihi Bastian est, et linguam Latinam disco. Potestis me iuvare?

I am having trouble with the first part of this sentence from my textbook:
Non solum eventus hoc docet - iste est magister stultorum! - sed etiam ratio.

Hoc and solum are both neuter, so I think they go together. Eventus is nominative and thus ought to be the subject of the verb, but I cannot get the phrase to make sense in my translation.

Please let me know where I'm going wrong! Thanks.

Salve, Bastian.

"Non solum eventus hoc docet - iste est magister stultorum! - sed etiam ratio."

"Not only the outcome teaches this -- that/such is the master of fools! -- but even reason."

"Solum" is an adverb meaning "only." Some adverbs are tricky because they look like nouns (e.g. "modum" can have the same adverbial meaning as "solum"). "hoc" then is the accusative object of "docet".

"Solum" adverbium est quod "only" anglice significat. Cum nonnuli adverbii nomina videntur, dolosi sunt (e.g., sic "solum," etiam" "modum"). Ita "hoc" objectivum, casu accusativo, verbi "docet" est.

Thank you, thesaurus!

Would someone check these translation exercises? I translated from English to Latin.
