Cicero to Atticus I.2

Postby klonesy » 2010-06-02, 16:56

I am working through a reader on Roman letters and came across a particularly difficult bit of wording (at least for me). It reads as thus: summa hominum est opinio tuos familiaris nobilis homines adversarios honori nostro fore. I took summa as agreeing with opinio and hominum as the plural genitive of them both. tuos familiaris nobilis homines came together as a chunk meaning Atticus' friends who came from senatorial families and adversarios as being what they WOULD be concerning Cicero's election.

The final product: It is the greatest opinion of men that your friends, the noble men of Rome [familiaris] will be adversaries to my election.

Is this a fair rendering? Help please?

Yes, that is right (though loosely translated).
Most men are rather stupid, and most of those who are not stupid are, consequently, rather vain.

That's the best I was hoping for, considering not being sure that I had even gotten the idea correctly. Thanks for your help.
