Hoogstwaarschijnlijk learning Indonesian

Postby Hoogstwaarschijnlijk » 2017-10-21, 12:48

Hi everyone,

I'm learning Indonesian at Duolingo but as this is actually English for Indonesians I don't have grammatical resources there and am just doing the lessons and trying to make sense of it, which is fun, but it might be nice to check if I understand things correctly. I tried to look things up but didn't know the grammatical words so that didn't work out.

So maybe someone here can help me?

1. Is it correct that for example the book is buku itu? What is this called, when the article is behind the noun?
2. What on earth is exactly happening with the verb membacakanmu?

Thanks in advance!
Native: Dutch
Learns: Latin and French
Knows also (a bit): English, German, Turkish, Danish

Corrections appreciated.

Buku itu literally means 'that book'; sometimes people translate the English phrase 'the book' this way. It's a determiner but not really an article AFAIK.
What on earth is exactly happening with the verb membacakanmu?

mem- = transitive prefix (indicates that the verb is transitive; in the case of this verb, it indicates that the verb is used for reading something specific, not just reading in general)
baca = to read
-kan = causative or benefactive suffix (e.g. to read for someone)
-mu = you (in this case, 'to you')
