Julehilsener

Postby Raufoss » 2009-12-24, 19:16

Joyous Christmas Eve everyone! I hope you had a great little Christmas Eve and will have a very Merry Christmas too!

Julehilsener*
kjempekveld*

In the first sentence you are addressing several people, but in the second only one, so you should('ve) fix(ed) that. I am not entirely sure, but it also sounds a bit weird wishing someone a merry Christmas Eve :) But elsewhere everything's perfect!

And if you don't know, romjul is the week between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, which I found it easiest to compare with a week of seven Thanksgivings when trying to describe to Americans

Tusen takk for det Aleco! :)

I went to a fun romjul party last night with lots of good Scandinavian smørgåsbord food, including gravlax, fennalår (dried leg of mutton), two kinds of herring, and three kinds of meatballs. For dessert, there was krumkaker and riskrem.

(For some reason I can't post the direct link to this wikipedia page, but it will be the first result you find when you do a goggle search on "Smörgåsbord.")

Juletiden

Postby Raufoss » 2012-12-15, 20:32

I'm curious to know what the Norwegians who post here consider to be Juletiden?

Is it 24.desember - 1. januar, or do you also perhaps include 21. desember - 23. desember and 2. januar too?

Many of my Norwegian friends posted Christmas greetings and copies of their Christmas cards on Facebook today. I wonder if this will become a new tradition to do this on "Little" Christmas eve (December 23rd)?

Or, indeed 13. January (The 20th day of Christmas, which I know as the day that all the christmas decorations should be taken down on).

To me atleast, lille juleaften is a part of the wider christmas-concept, as this is a day that does contain traditions connected to christmas (For instance, it is the day that "Grevinnen og Hovmesteren" is shown on TV).

At some point the focus does move on from Jul to Nyttår though, so in all fairness, "romjula" usually wouldn't stretch all the way to Nyttårsaften. (The greetings will for instance change from "God Jul (og Godt Nyttår)", to "Godt Nyttår" on New Years eve, and I haven't heard anyone say "God Jul" after New Years eve.

God Jul alle sammen.
