If there is one Nordic film I would suggest for people to see, it's the Danish movie "Festen", a.k.a. "The Celebration". It's hard to describe what it's about without giving away part of the plot – Wikipedia does so in the first paragraph, for instance, but contrary to the name, it's a sombre story about digging up trauma from the past. Obviously not a movie to watch at an actual party, but it's is the only Nordic movie among my top 10 favourites.

Tusen takk for forslaget Rounin. :)

I have added this film to my Netflix queue.

One month ago while I was staying with some friends south of Drammen, we watched the DVD of the movie Max Manus. It was the first Norwegian movie I have ever watched without Norwegian subtitles. I didn't understand all of the dialog, but I still really enjoyed this movie a lot.

Max Manus was shown in New York back in March, but as far as I know there still isn't a DVD available in the U.S. with English subtitles.

O'Horten

Postby Raufoss » 2009-12-28, 18:39

I watched the Norwegian movie O'Horten last night and enjoyed it. It was extra special for me because main character Odd Horten took the same Oslo streetcar that I used last month during the two weeks I was living near the Disen station. There were several other places I've been to in Oslo that were shown in this movie including the Valkyrien restaurant in Majorstua, the Oslo S train station, Tøyenbad (public swimming pool in the Tøyen neighborhood), and Gardemoen airport.

I'd be interested to hear some comments from those who have seen one of more of the films that were shown at this year's festival.

Her er noen linker til informasjon om to av de norske filmene som ble vist:

Ingen norsk Oscar

Here is an excerpt from an article in VG:

Ingen norsk Oscar

Delfinene i «The Cove» slår munkene i «Burma VJ».

:yep:

I should see that movie, it looks very good just judging from the trailer.

"trailer" = "trailer"

Just remember that while the word is written the same, the pronounciation might differ from that which is used in english. I would for instance pronounce the english version closer to "treilør" (sorry, don't know IPA", but when used in norwegian it would be pronounced "trailer" (YMMV, as I guess this difference might differ between english accents).

The same goes with many, but not all loans like that, for instance: "Mini-Jack-plugg" (as in the kind you use on your stereo), is pronounced "Mini Djækk Plugg", and not "Mini Jakk Plugg". I guess I can list a few common loans, again, I don't know any IPA, so the pronouncations are just approximations (using how the letters themselves are pronounced alone, i.e. "De" would be "D" then "e", not "D i", like the word "de" is pronounced.). (Appologies to everyone that DOES know IPA, who will surely cringe a bit from this presentation). Also, all of these might not necessarily be loans, but they are written the same in English and Norwegian.

English - Norwegian - Pronounciation
Scanner - Scanner (Computer equipment) - Skænner
Chip - Chip - Tsjipp
Book [An Appointment] - Å Booke - Å bukke (The norwegian word "å bukke", "to bow", is pronounced closer to "å bokke")
Bar [Pub] - Bar/Pub - Bar/Pøbb
MP3 - MP3 - Empetre
Handsfree - Handsfree - Hændsfri
Clutch - Clutch - Kløtsj
Park - Park (The kind with trees and possibly benches) - Park
TV - TV - Te ve
DVD - DVD - De ve de
Boot [computer] - Å Boote - Å Bute
Match [clothes] - Å Matche - Å Mætsje
Video [VCR-kind] - Video - Vidjo/Videjo/Video (A bit unsure)
Note [Musical kind, i.e. G-Note] - Note - Note
Drive-In - Drive-In - Draiv-inn
Drive-Through - Drive-Through - Draiv-Tru
Ketchup - Ketchup/Ketsjup - Ketsjup (Both written forms are legal)
Guide [Tourist] - Guide/Gaid - Gaid
Bacon - Bacon - Beiken
Taxi - Taxi/Drosje - Tæksi/Drosje (Both are in common use)
Game [verb] - Å game - Geime
Film [movie] - Film - Film

As a side note, I understand there to be a difference that goes like this:
English-Norwegian
Essay - Paper written for school, "Stil" (Not completely sure here)
Novel - Long story, often atleast a books worth of text, "Roman"
Short Story - Novelle

Norwegian - English:
Essay - Specific writing style, a loan from french "essayer" (I think)
Roman - Novel
Novelle - Short story.
Stil - What I would translate into english as "essay", but without any other implications than that it is a task for school. An "essay" would be a kind of "stil".

Now, this might be a bit off-topic, but if you want to know more about loans, feel free to start a new thread, and I'll try to answer as best I can.

Gode informative svar, tusen takk. :yep:

Litt trist, men veldig godt laget film.

"Tror" = Expression of faith/belief. "Jeg tror på spøkelser"
"Synes" = "I think that", Expression of personal viewpoint.

"Jeg tror det var en veldig bra film" - "I believe that the movie was really great [however I'm not quite sure]"
"Jeg synes det var en veldig bra film" - "I thought that the movie was really great"

Max Manus is got to be one of the best Norwegian films I've seen but there's lots of other great ones too. I last saw Død Snø and liked that too. I think the Norwegians do horror especially well which is interesting since there's practically no horror films at all made in either Sweden or Denmark. That's certainly not true of Norway:

De dødes tjern (1958)
Villmark (2003)
Naboer (2005)
Fritt vilt (2006)
Fritt vilt II (2008)
Rovdyr (2008)
Død Snø (2009)
Skjult (2009)
Snarveien (2009)

There's also Fritt vilt III coming out later this year which I'm really looking forward.

Did you watch Max Manus with English subtitles? If so, where did you see it?

Now that Max Manus has been released in Canada, hopefully this great film will start being shown in the U.S. sometime in the near future.

Tusen takk. Yeah I saw it with English subs - It's being sold in the UK on DVD and is only £4.30 on Amazon at the moment: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Max-Manus-Man-W ... 664&sr=8-1

Not sure what the delivery fees to the US are though. They seem to release some Norwegian films only here and some only in the US but I'd have thought Max Manus is the sort of film that would be fairly popular anywhere.

Rights to Max Manus Acquired by D Films

Postby Raufoss » 2010-05-07, 0:31

If you live in the U.S. it looks like Max Manus could be coming soon to a theater near you. 8-)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 1442e2e1c0

D Films now plans a limited platform release in select U.S. markets after "Max Manus" had its U.S. premiere opening the Minneapolis Film Festival on April 21.

Here also is a link to a list of Norwegian films shown last month during the International Film Festival in Minneapolis:

http://www.mspfilmfest.org/MMX/category ... ion/norway

It looks like Max Manus has been so popular that it will be shown again this Sunday, nine days after the film festival officially ended. 8-)

Torn Curtain

Postby Raufoss » 2010-05-31, 3:55

I just watched an old Alfred Hitchcock film called "Torn Curtain" that opened with a couple of sentences of spoken Norwegian on a very cold ship in the Osterfjord. There was also a little spoken Danish and some filming on location in Copenhagen in this 1966 political thriller that starred Paul Newman and Julie Andrews.

That reminds me of "The Thing", which opens with a somewhat weird pronounciation of some norwegian:

07:45 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25_MNd-RDa8

"Se til helvete og kom dere vekk
Det er ikke en bikkje
Det er en slags ting.
Det imiterer en bikkje.
Det er ikke virkelig.
Kom dere vekk idioter."

Relistening now, I realized that the only off-putting part is the pronouncation of "virkelig". Which is weird since the director states that what is spoken there is only gibberish meant to sound norwegian.

It doesn't always go that well with movies though, don't forget the X-Files episode "Død Kalm", with characters like "Trondheim", talking "Norwegian":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDe0xQN1XSE

"eide do dee dei"

Legible? yes, mostly. Good? well since i guess the actors didn't speak a word of norwegian themselves, it's extremely good. I do give out quite a few points for bothering to actually use norwegian instead of just making it "sound like" norwegian.

Here is my attempt at a translation of this:

Get the hell out of here. This is not a dog. It is some kind of a thing.
It imitates a dog. It is not real. Get out of here, you idiots!

I wasn't a regular viewer of X-Files, but did happen to see this episode a few years ago. :D
